Over 5 years later and RDR2 still looks better than almost every AAA title out there.

I have over 4,000 hours in just the story mode of this game and I’m left in awe every time I boot it up. Its presentation and realism are simply unmatched after half a decade.

What Rockstar managed to pull off was magic and it has me all the more excited for GTA6

Red Dead 2 is the best game ever made. It is only a matter of time before they make an adaptation of it. Pedro Pascal as John Marston and Joel Edgerton as Arthur Morgan would be my favourite.

I agree, it is amazing and all of the attention to detail is really unheard of. 4,000 hours is a lot, generally curious is that because you’ve played the story numerous times or you just free roam and find new things to do every time?

it’s because talent goes beyond technical limitations. Next gen games can look like crap if developers put no effort into it.

One glance at that picture and the soundtrack started playing in my head

Man I wish I could get back into this game. When it first came out I think I made it all the way to the 5th act, but stopped for whatever reason. Tried to go back, didn’t remember anything, felt like I needed to start all over.

I’ve tried 5 times to restart this game, I just get so bored within the first 2 hours of it. That’s not including the slog that is the intro, either.

Maybe one day it will click again, I really hope it will.. 🙁

  6. It’s not the “looks” that keep it better than other games, it’s the overall design. You have to really look to catch the level of detail transitions and the grass never appears to pop in. That’s something that drives me nuts in many games, the traveling ring around your character where grass loads in. They designed the entire game around the limitations they had.

The game is straight up seamless. You want to go from Tumbleweed to the insanely detailed interiors of Saint Denis, never gonna load. This allowed me to disappear into that game world. I’d still be playing if R* didn’t abandon RDO. It’s all I want a game to be.

Notable mention: Minecraft (the graphics are there out of this world!!!)

So be fair most AAA games probably have less than half the budget that RDR2 had.

  9. Yeah, this game cost like a billion dollars to make or something.

Not only does it look better than any current game in a lot of ways, it doesn’t require FSR/DLSS to run well either.

Games will never look quite as nice with those settings enabled and it shows when you go back to a game like RDR2.

Days Gone is holding up great as well, and yeah they do look great, but….its mainly trees rocks n grass guys.

I think forbidden west looks better, but RDR2 still beats it in pretty much every other area.

  13. RDR2 is the most detailed and advanced game to date, NPC’s would have a daily routine, the butcher would literally slice the meat in real time, corpses would deteriorate in time from having flies on them first all the way into becoming bones only, the player would put bullets in the weapon in real time, the amount of scenarios and unique things to do it’s unbeatable by any existing game in terms of detail which makes me get goosebumps just thinking about how crazy detailed GTA6 is going to be.

RDR2 had 2K employees working on it and it’s not even their flagship, as of now Rockstar has 6.4K employees and they said it themselves on their Newswire that they aim to surpass their latest project which is RDR2.

AND it runs perfectly fine at native resolution on my dogshit computer while still looking that way.

4000 hours is 24 hours a day for 6 whole months. Get a life. Wow.

I actually worked on this game! Not at R* anymore but I remember thinking in development that walking/riding through the snow (and mud to a lesser extent) was the most amazing experience I had ever had. I literally could not believe that something like this was possible in a game after working on and playing so many over the years. And then I learned that the team had modeled the clouds in 3D and it kind of blew my mind. They really take it to the next level at R* which is probably why their games are so memorable.

huh funny. i got that game like 2 days ago and im boutta start playing it

It really, *really* doesn’t. It’s graphically *impressive*, if you ignore a *bunch* of things (foliage and water, for one), but in all actuality the ‘realism’ of it wore off almost immediately as even more technically and graphically impressive titles were released. That’s the trouble with “cutting edge” graphics; they’re only cutting edge for about a week before something better comes out.

It *also* lacks any sort of memorable style to it beyond “generic western”, which admittedly is somewhat rare in the gaming space. There isn’t any *substance* to the aesthetic, it’s just the standard mud browns, snow whites and forest greens of almost any open world, just with a cowboy leather theme slapped over the top of it.

And that’s *before* you get to the godawful filters applied to hide texture pop-ins and muddiness, the terrible weather effects, the nearly nonexistent damage to models during firefights or combat (they literally apply a blood decal to the hit zone in most situations, that’s it. If you’re *lucky* a limb or the head might visibly just shrink and pinch at the joint), the hilariously bad ragdolls, the complete lack of environmental effects from gunfire and explosions, the *hilariously* shit explosions and so, so many more extremely weak graphical details people like to just kind of conveniently forget about because the godrays and skybox can sometimes look kind of nice.

The Details alone make me sink ours into it. I still found little Things every time i play that satisfy the Explorer in me.

  20. Still sitting on my backlog because I’m not ready for time commitment it deserves

  21. Omegaprimus

Yeah rdr2 is beautiful, the only game that I would say would rival it is cyberpunk 2077

  22. OldManActual

I remember when I first booted RDR2 on my PS4 how SHOCKED I was at how good the graphics were. Not only the graphics, but the animations and the acting and such just makes it a world. So much so that the gameplay can distract from the kickass movie you are watching. When the two are in sync you fuckin’ FEEL like Arthur the gunfighter.
