I generally prefer Steam, but, GOG has some exceptional classics.

What's everyone's top recommendations from GOG – either because it's DRM free or because Steam just doesn't have it?

Gog is usually a lot better for older games than steam, like anything pre-2010.  They use unofficial patches for modern hardware a lot of the time so you can run it out of the box.

They also allow you to roll back patches or not update games easily so you don’t break mods.  Like with the fallout 4 next gen patch it was very easy to tell it not to update so I can still use mods for it.

Also yeah I generally prefer them for being drm free, but I’ll still get stuff on steam if it’s unavailable on gog or steam has a better price.

Fallout series up to 4, Cyberpunk 2077, and Metro series.

I have over a thousand games on Steam, but always grab them on GOG now if I can.

After seeing stores drop legacy platforms (looking at you Sony and Nintendo) it seemed smart to start disconnecting.

They have some good old games that’s for sure

It also has free DRM. I don’t know what DRM is but it’s free so that’s good.

When possible I’ll buy on gog and import the keys into steam. Best of both worlds.

No one remembers this one but alpha centauri, it’s a turn based strategy game made by sid meier set on an alien planet and in my opinion it’s honestly one of his best games.

Gog has a really good search function too. The steam store search feature is really bad at showing you games that were popular within a specific time window, you can only search what’s popular now or what was popular over all time. You can’t search by popularity + time + genre + price + deals. You can search for some of those things individually but not all at the same time, the list resets and you have to scroll through pages of the same games over and over to get to stuff you havent seen.

In gog you can apply multiple filters at the same time. e.g. “search for popular RPG games from 2010-2015, that are $10-20” which is exactly what I want to be able to do in steam to find good games I might have skipped. You can even link GOG with your steam account so that the search feature does not show you games you already own on gog or steam.

Was there a graphics overhaul for vampires the masquerade?

I purchased the whole Wing Commander series of games off GOG like 5 years ago.

    Star Trek Voyager Elite Force

It’s not great Star Trek, and it’s got very dated graphics and gameplay, but it is a real time capsule of the era, and I had a great time experiencing it for the first time decades after playing the demo. It’s not available on Steam.

Descent! Fantastic game on GoG, it’s like the underrated cousin of Doom, you play as a space ship traversing mine shafts on alien planets and the level design is superb

GOG has waaaaaay less variety, especially for multiplayer games, but unlike steam theres not a single purchase ive regretted on it.

Wonderful example of nailing down a niche

Gog has some great deals. A while ago I bought the Batman Arkham games, the yakuza games (minus the spin-offs), and the metro games all for $70

Man, GoG is the best. No DRM, and can link the games to Steam library for better controller support.
