Oh you mean when you were a kid so all your emotions were more extreme, and the genre was relatively new? Zombies was never scary lol
Fridge_living_tips
Yea and now 21 savenge is going around in watered down outbreak
Feisty_Area8023
Yeah, I miss 2017.

Someone explain to op how nostalgia and rose tinted glasses work
You were younger. That’s why.

No?
I grew up with Resident Evil. There hasn’t been a single zombie game outside of that series that has even made me feel uneasy.
That’s just my experience, though. Tbf, I don’t really get scared from media.

waw was definitely my favorite zombies game. bo2 was really good too. zombies ain’t the same anymore.
_wtfjason_
waw/bo1 we’re and still are the best fucking zombies experience. we need NAZI ZOMBIES back.
Gabethebig_G
They definitely were scary again with WW2, but nothing after that has topped.
ThePeeksYT
Nacht and Verruct were a little scary but I definitely prefer the Bo3 era of focusing on stylized and beautiful maps as opposed to “scary”. WWII zombies thought making it scary again would help but the maps were really bland imo.
Froaklies
Zombies was never scary. Creepy? Yeah for sure, it’s definitely lost a lot of the horror undertones, but scary? The only time it was ever legit scary was when I was an actual child.
VoodooChipFiend
It’s because not only were they zombies, but also nazis
toddsins
Ww2 zombies were the scariest imo
CustardEducational99
Scary theme wise, new Cods are much closer than BO3
OkReporter6938
It was different, better compared to CW and MW, but not scary
BlockSids
WaW-bo3 are the only zombies that exist in my mind, yall can keep the rest (bo4/CW are probably ok i just never really learned the maps so theyre honorable mentions)
Azraelontheroof
WWII

i’ll have you know Nicki Minaj is far scarier than Verrückt
DipsetCapo84
Did we really kill all undead Nazi soldiers?
WiIIemdafoe
The best zombies experience for me would be, Bo3/4 maps, Cold War mechanics, and the zombies from WW2.

I seem to remember the menu screen for COD: WWII being pretty gruesome and the loading screens as well, although I only really remember the final reich.
Swordfire-21
I remember Nacht being creepy as hell. It was perfect. It started to get less creepy around Shi No Nina, though. Now, zombies is just Fortnite
SoulTaker669
Yeah back when I was like 12 lol as you get use to things they lose that touch honestly. When I played silent Hill 2 or resident evil 2 remake for the first few times I got spooked but after so many playthroughs you’re not gonna get scared anymore.
RobertLU345
I like this new zombies but def miss the strategy and planning element that old zombies brought. You had to know game mechanics and the map in order to do well.

I still get jumpscares on moon and nacht.
In bo4 and mwz you just have mindless npc screeming like idiots that can be destroyed in seconds with overpowered weapons
Yes it’s difficult and you get killed sometimes but it’s fact that the old zombies were much more dangerous in the old maps
Facts, it’s not nostalgia.
Also ww2 was really good and showed how the problem is not old vs new.. but soul vs overstimulting colorful cashgrabs
Play it again and come back here

Tbh I don’t think they lost the ability to creep us the fuck out on occasion. Custom Zombies maps certainly have for me. Just the developers haven’t leaned into it in a while.
There’s a lot less mass market appeal for horror and it wasn’t exactly the focus for most of its history. Ever since BO1, it’s more about the power fantasy, overarching story, and Easter eggs.
If we want a more horror focused zombie game, there’s already a lot with things like Resident Evil. Why try to compete with that when they can lean into what makes cod zombies so unique in the first place?

Been playing zombies sense i beat WaW campaign. Stopped playing after coldwar was trash. I recently got BO3 on my steamdeck though, and am really enjoying the crazy amount of custom maps. Alot of talented fans did so much for zombies that treyarch couldnt. And im stoked to be diving in finally.
Aggravating-Pilot583
I wouldn’t go as far as calling it scary but it definitely used to be horror inspired and not fortnight inspired
NovaRipper1
No, I wasn’t 5 when I first played it

Bo2 had the vibes for it as well as bo1 lol

Mwz is scary too. I am scared of crashing every second.

Best zombies for me subjectively along with Bo1
