It seems that Intel CPU’s are quite problematic lately.

    That reminds me. With that big instruction set vulnerability fix on consumer cpus did anyone test the performance drop?

    Well yeah, the problem is Intel and the motherboard makers are pushing the chips too hard. Intel wants to beat AMD in the benchmark scores, and the motherboard manufacturers want to offer better performance than their competitors as a selling point so their default profiles winds up being an automatic overclock.

    Intel needs to crack down on the motherboard manufacturers and require they actually follow the chip’s stated TDP numbers for their defaults (though that would make Intel’s CPUs uncompetitive vs. AMD so they won’t do it). Either that or reviewers might need to start doing testing with Intel’s base spec and treat the out of box experience as an overclock that might not be stable in the long term.

  3. Why I undervolted my 13900kf. Motherboard pushes waaay too much power to it otherwise. Even the so called Intel failsafe settings don’t actually run it at Intels specs. For me it’s the motherboards pushing too much power.

    The problem is the implementation of the setting. It sets the VID table to Intel’s fail safe and ignores what is present on the cpu (1.52v max). It also sets the current limit to Intel’s iccmax recommended value which would be fine if most lga1700 motherboards didn’t have broken current limiting functionality and throttle well below the specified limit. I’m honestly surprised it was only a 12% loss given what it does. Ideally on LGA1700 just setting PL1/2 to proper spec values should be good enough since it’s basically impossible to pull above the 307a spec at 253w. That will also preserve most of the performance.

    I did a light under volt with stock clocks and lowered my temps by 10 C and max power draw by 80 W. I don’t think the MSI PRO boards add an overvolt, I just wanted it to run quieter. I got my Idle down to 7 W also.

    This pretty much negates the only reason people were stating for why they went Intel on a build with a new motherboard at the high end. That being that it was on a mature platform that should supposedly be stable, since the tradeoff was not having any future releases to upgrade to.
