OG Fallout lead Tim Cain defends the show’s lore changes in a glowing full review—’Not that it matters, I’m not in charge of this anymore, and neither are you’
This has pretty much been the position of every original creator of Fallout. Fans have been trying to push this narrative that Bethesda and the original Fallout creators hate each other and that Bethesda was somehow mad about New Vegas being popular meanwhile all the original Fallout creators just go “new Fallout stuff is pretty cool too, actually”.
Vic_Hedges
But does he know who I am?!?
dethb0y
“got my check, see you losers later.”
TooLazyToReadIt
They’ll create their own fallout with blackjack and hookers!
Wait a minute…
TheohBTW
As a person who thought the show was okay; that is geniunely a moronic statement. Respect the lore, respect the fans. Nothing more, nothing less.
gnralhavoc84
If it meets the spirit of the lore then some changes are ok. The show has been much better than other attempts with other franchises.
arqe_
There is no “lore changing” stop putting words into people’s mouths.
He said lore drifting can happen to IP’s like Fallout. Which is big enough that you may need to shift some stuff around to create bigger stories out of it.
Canis_Familiaris
Be mad and seethe, Oxhorn 🤣
Sabetha1183
I know this is gonna be a lot about the show, but Tim Cain has a YouTube channel that has lots of great stories and wisdom about game design and development. Especially if you’re a fan of any of his games like Fallout, Arcanum, or Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines he talks about the making of those games.
As for the TV show I agree with Tim’s overarching point in his video which is that the show *feels* very Fallout, and that all the “lore drift” as he calls it at the end of the day just isn’t a big deal as long as the TV show is still good.
and like, the show IS good.
PixelLitKevin
He raises good points. Lore drift happens as the story gets bigger, and yeah: dates can change based on unreliable narrators.
Honestly the nitty gritty detail of dates and times is probably the least important part of an adaptation as opposed to nailing the themes and vibes.
Diamond523
Lore…. Lore never changes.
Wait…
Bagz402
I don’t get the anger to the lore changes. Nobody ever gave 2 fucks about Shady Sands, it’s hilarious to see people pretend to care now just so they can he angry at current thing. As with NV, the games have shown us time and time again how it just takes 1 person to save the world OR absolutely fuck things up for everyone. Thats the beauty of the fallout series. The TV show was amazing and I can’t wait to see more.
FerretAres
So I’m not super up on fallout lore but is the major complaint that the show got a date wrong for shady sands getting blown up? Because after seeing how they massacred the wheel of time lore, the rings of power lore, and halo lore that seems like a pretty small issue comparatively.
TotallyRedditLeftist
I really hate the idea that you build a world for us to become fans of, then when that world starts getting messed up we’re supposed to just accept it and not complain at all.
Kuruk_TR
That Amazon money must be good
monkey_D_v1199
“Lore drift” a nice way of saying retncon. True some fans can be toxic and dicks, but it’s still valid if a fan has concerns or complaints about lore.
mm202088
Shows good. And that’s all lol

I’m surprised Todd Howard has never given an interview where he tells some of Bethesda’s and his own haters to eat a dick. Like if I’m Todd and someone made a “sixteen times the detail” joke for the five billionth time, I’d probably just dropkick them at this point.
The OG and New Vegas Fallout fans are some of the most obnoxious by far. Maybe some of the most obnoxious fans in all of game fandom, honestly. Always blathering on about how Bethesda destroyed the franchise, or insisting they’ve hatched some devious scheme to disappear New Vegas or the original lore despite Todd personally inviting Tim Cain to every new Fallout premiere, and putting New Vegas in the bloody show. No, he’s trying to destroy New Vegas because you’re convinced he might’ve gotten some chronology wrong, or because a city was moved somewhere else.
They’re people making entertainment products, to try and entertain people. And they all have a healthier perspective of their work than some of the fans who consume it.
Kenobi5792
I’m not that versed into Fallout lore, so what are the main conflicting timeline “mistakes” in the show? For what it’s worth, considering that everyone in the Fallout universe is a total lunatic, it makes sense that it will be some continuity errors (it even happens IRL)
Augustus_Chavismo
Did anyone else enjoy the show a lot but also wouldn’t like if what they changed was brought over to the games?
Dan_Felder
Many creators like seeing people play with their ideas in new ways. I’m one of them.
Walker5482
I dont have to control something in order to criticise it.
JDBoyes07
The show is awesome. That’s all that should really matter.
Halvardr_Stigandr
Amazon’s checks keep on cashing, so these bozos keep endorsing a show that takes a dump all over the canon while being hot garbage.
Hicks_206
Yknow, I worked with a decent handful of OG Interplay folks for years, they all still love Fallout and love to see it succeed.
ahchx
fanatics will ever try to ruin and bombreview everthing that is not 1 to 1 adapted according to the Digital Bible: THE LORE. its very annoying for the fans and people in general that just want to enjoy a good show (something very rare nowadays).
HughesJohn
People forget why Bethesda wanted to buy the fallout IP.
Because they loved it.
(And the rotting corpse of interplay/black isle just wanted to screw every penny out of the IP while doing nothing with it).
fatamSC2
Tim Cain has always been a G. His game design rambling videos on youtube are a good watch
evan466
I recommend everyone watch his actual video and the video he points to in his review instead of relying on these out of context sound bites that Reddit posts.
SmallFatHands
Im just glad more people are realizing how fucking annoying and toxic the New Vegas Elitists are. Been dealing with these assholes for years. It’s not enough to say New Vegas is your fav game your not a real fallout fan to them unless you go to Todd Howard’s house and shoot his dog.
ElmertheAwesome
This is how I found out about Season 2. I literally threw my headset across my desk and leaped out of my chair! This made my weekend.
HarmlessSnack
You know the show is fucking great when the only complaint people have to throw at it is “but it isn’t 100% accurate to the game lore!”
oldmanartie
People who can’t hold two or more thoughts in their mind should have their internet disconnected. Multiple things can be true and good, it isn’t necessary to manufacture drama. I personally thought the TV show really captured the essence of Fallout, along with some really well written and played characters made for a very enjoyable show.
Furthermore, it’s a fucking fake made up story, who cares if exact dates and locations don’t match up? They don’t actually have to make anything match at all if they really wanted, and it still would be a good show if it were well made. I feel the same way about people trying to make Zelda or any other game series have a timeline that makes sense. It doesn’t have to, it never did, it’s not real.
htraos
It’s not about being in charge. It’s about having an opinion.
ermghoti
>Cain took more issue with the show’s answer for who shot first in the 2077 nuclear war, seeming to politely disagree with the surprise reveal.
I mean, this is far and away the biggest difficulty the show presents, and it’s not getting talked about that much.
We aren’t supposed to know, and it doesn’t matter. The late pre-war Fallout world was doomed, the was early 20th Century Europe was. A century of bad decisions had inched the world over aprecipice there was no way from which to return.
It was also pretty bad writing, the conspiracy is implausible. Based on the events depicted in the show, and a couple cues from the games, I suspect/hope the “reveal” turns out to be a plan that gets the rug pulled from under it though.
Cyber_Connor
So are Bethesda not allowed to make new lore of their own IP?
Kelend
Personally I’m not that upset about the changes.
However, the argument: “The creator said its okay” is weak. Was weak when George Lucas changed the lore around the force. Once you create something and release it to the world, any retconning is going to be taken badly by its fans.
End of story.
Binturung
Personally, I mainly hate the fact they relocated a key location to be a sacrificial lamb for a return status quo of wasteland scavengers.
The show feels very Fallout 1. But it shouldn’t feel like that because it’s over a century later, and an entire nation had risen. But it doesnt look like that ever happened now.
And I know some people will say the location doesnt matter, but they settled there because it was near where the Vault they were from was. So to me, it did matter for various reasons.
CaveRanger
The thing that annoyed me most in the show was >!the daughter staring straight at a nuke going off 10 miles away and not being instantly blinded.!<
Also seriously >!everybody in that house should’ve been a crispy critter. They really should have had them out in the countryside or something.!<
