Ubisoft Killing The Crew Sets a Dangerous Precedent for Game Preservation

Sadly this type of behaviour is what I have come to expect from Ubisoft.

Wasn’t it their CEO who said gamers need to get used to not owning games that they buy only a few months ago?

Thankfully, I don’t like much of their games, Farcry and Assassins Creed were once some of my favourite games but even I got sick of the same formula rehashed year after year, money grubbing lazy bastards just want to move to subscription models.

So if I understand right, the main difference between The Crew and every other time that an online only game has been shut down is the fact that they are pulling licenses?

More than anything it just shows how fucking garbage Ubisoft are. The sooner they leave the industry, the better

Stop buying UBi let them go bankrupt

Why do you think there’s more and more people playing games from past generations or even older. Currrent stuff just can’t be trusted to survive if it has any online component.

We’ve also seen companies like Sony willing to straight up remove content people bought from their platform, (it was movies but could easily apply to games).

The video game industry other than indie can just die for all I care.

If any lawyers see this, can you start a Class Action Lawsuit for us? Thanks.

Someone who owns a physical should rip it and just start handing it out for free

  8. Captain_Hucklebuck

Who the hell is *still* buying ubisoft games??

  9. Due_Professional_894

was aboit to buy the viking ac title despite the mixed reviews. No thanks.

They kill the servers for a game cause of license-pulling, then expect people to buy a star wars-license game for top dollar. Yeah… that’s not concerning.

  11. squitsquat

If buying doesn’t mean ownership, stealing is perfectly acceptable

  12. Ubisoft is always going to scrape the bottom of the barrel to save a buck. Don’t buy their games

  13. Oh modern games will not be able to play in the future. Like single player games that require internet are doomed

  14. Hmmm, it’s a multiplayer marketed and multiplayer focused game. Not sure what the issue is. It was probably in their EULA and this is not a case for the argument about game preservation. Not every game is worth preservation. The Crew being one of them.

I still have the game. How is it legal to make a working product, then turn it off permanently after selling millions of dollars worth of said items?

This isn’t rhetorical. Isn’t there case law where some scheister put a kill switch on all the cars, ovens, or radios he sold?

Is it legal for me to sabotage a car that I’m selling via my dealership to force people to come back and pay for service or a new car? If so, I’ve got a business plan to write up and submit to the SBA

Darkspore (PC version) had their servers pulled AND ALL got delisted from EA Desktop App before The Crew, once EA Desktop App was released. Why didn’t anyone call EA out on this one too?

I’m glad people are calling out Ubi on this of course, but people need to call out EA too for this mess.

And all MMO’s or always-online games should be reworked to work offline with AI/bots for teammates if needed and LAN/TP-ICP support for players that wanna run their own servers too.

DRM like Denuvo, Securom, Tages, and other junk should be forced to removed too, after a game’s done w/ official patch-runs, etc. Same goes for client-app requirements for base-games, DLC’s, and other stuff to boot/run too.

I have more than enough options to play I won’t need to buy any Ubi games from here on out

  18. fall3nmartyr

So anyway here’s a 150 dollar always on single player game

  19. FTSeeOwboys

If we have competent legislators, they could make a law that digital items shall be provided for 20 years after final retail sale and then all source code and IP is released if support is rescinded.

  20. Complete_Bad6937

It’s actually rather kind of Ubisoft to remind us why we should avoid them at all costs

  21. Sixclynder

Even tho it’s not the best game ghost recon break point is a game I always go back too to turn off my brain but it being online only I feel like im gonna lose access to it one day
. Even if I only play single player .

  22. Headline makes it sound like they killed one of their dev teams

  23. fluffynuckels

I’m so sick of seeing this same idea get regurgitated here every five minutes we get it it’s bad ubievil. Now people are just posting for easy karma

I stopped buying Ubisoft, EA, Activision games over 10 years ago. Every year when these companies announce games I constantly tell people “you’re gonna be back here when the game comes out and complain…then the next year you’ll do the same…then the year after that….and the year after that.

I’m not sure what it is about most gamers…but they are really stupid when it comes to greedy games. Even when the new release is terrible from day 1…they will pre-order the next one as soon as they can.

This is why these companies won’t fail. Too many people think these companies still make good games.

I saw an article talking about how most game time played was in games from 10 years ago or maybe just not in the last couple of years, and you know what they are going to do, right?

They’re going to combat that. You can’t keep playing your library of old games that you own, then you’re not spending money. You have to keep spending money. They could make better games, games that are so good that you’ll beg them to take more of your money. That’d really work. That’s too hard though.

So they’re going to take away your libraries. They’re going to do everything they can to try and force you to buy the new games, which of course will all have new language that makes taking them away later even easier, and then they’ll have their fixed problem because you’ll have to buy the new stuff, the old stuff won’t be available anymore!

Seems far-fetched doesn’t it? Seems ridiculous, I should take off my tin foil.

    Shouldn’t I?
