Just literally, the foam is pretty hard so why they put it in here?? And why the foam is almost the size of a box?

(im thinking too much about it honestly 💀 but it cant leave my mind)

Marketing. The spiffy box looks a lot better on a shelf than just the processor in a blister pack.

  3. DaBombDiggidy

They wanted to make a box that’s the same size or bigger than intel. When it’s on the shelf bigger = better.
(Most would be surprised how fickle people are)

  4. Lanky_Information825

Why to fit the big box of course…

  5. cat_rush

You want them to fill it with concrete instead?

Its an expensive piece of equipment. Kinda fragile too. The foam is probably to keep it from getting damaged.

Foam surplus is a problem right now. Many companies have so much extra, foam is practically coming out their ears.

Their solution is to simply give it away. They have data analysts that have determined as much as 85% will end up in the oceans killing much of the sea life. Within 3-5 years, once most our jobs have been taken by AI, we’ll be working for the tech moguls scraping foam from the ocean with pool nets.

It’s all a part of AMD and Intel’s plan to destroy gaming and send us all out to sea.

I’m guessing they have started to fill in with foam the area that is empty in boxes that do not have a heat sink. Maybe they were getting crushed before?

Same reason game cartridge boxes were the same size as books

Because these things used to contain stock fans. Now you gotta pay for 4.99 stock fan bitch.

CPU display boxes were designed to hold a CPU cooler too, they have kept the same designs but dropped the coolers for the more beefy CPUs.

Some packaging is smaller but these habits take time to get rid of for some reason

  12. Excalidoom

Because there is a version with a cooler and without so instead of making 10 types of boxes, they make 1 size and fill the rest with filler

The box needs to be big enough it doesn’t disappear from Best Buy shelves inside someone’s pocket. They also use the same size box for the CPUs that include a fan.

5xxx only had a cardboard cross inside and the whole box was flimsy. I like that 7xxx has the foam block again, as I keep them anyway to sell them when I upgrade.

AMD is a fragile CPU compared to Intel

    /jk please don’t kill me

  16. So the robotics handling packaging don’t crush the delicate chip.

So that you don’t develop a case of foamo

Because it’s also your new neck pillow!

They make one box to hold coolers and cups, but the higher end cpus don’t come with Coolers because they expect you to get something better like an aio. They don’t make two kind of boxes so they just put cardboard or foam.

I also personally think it makes it harder to steal ever so slightly. A tiny chip and matching box would fit too easy on your pocket and is really expensive

Likely to prevent easier shoplifting. You can’t easily put something like this in your pocket without it sticking out like a sore thumb than the same thing without the foam. Also, it may be to keep size consistency across AM5 chips that also contain a CPU cooler, though I only have the 7800X3D and no other AM5 CPU, so I could be wrong.

  21. MrInfected2

Fack the whales and nature inn general! Give us that foam!

  22. MonteCrysto31

At least put the dam thing in the middle of it??

because your fat mother may accidentally sit on it.
