When I found out that you can’t just make a game and put it on Steam

Sean Murray: “Well I guess I have to market it myself”

Naive me: Why not? You don’t really need a publisher, don’t tell me putting it on steam costs $ as well. I really never thought of that as an option even.

  3. find a couple youtuber willing to play you game and get free advertising

  4. Trexmanovus

This is what they call barrier to entry.

  5. Oh that’s the problem! Never mind, let me dump 100k$ into some ads.

Can’t you just make a game and put it on Steam? No guarantee it gets played, of course, but you can upload it.

An actual decent way for indie games to market without money is the steamfest that been occurring, you get ad as the demo is played, and a lot of YouTubers make ranking of the best demos on steamnextfest

Oh it’s the dude who was posting sleazy advertisements for his game a while ago lol. He made a post showing like his 4 favorite games and one of them was the game he developed. They were all “oh I guess that is my game you’re right” when he got called out

I’m feeling your pain friend. Who would have thought getting people to see your game is harder than actually making it?

This looks like the kind of game they tend to like over on r/steamdeck. If it works on that platform, once it’s out, give it a shout out over there.

This guy again? Continually making memes to advertise his game.

  12. So for Steam, there is a up front $100 cost for upload/store page, etc..

The problem is that you’re going to have to build up a community first. Without a community, you have a game on a storefront with no eyes looking at it.

Your store front needs a Discord, which you have to be an active participant on. Make a demo, release that on Steam and itch.io as well as other places like Game Jolt. You are your own advertiser, so it’s time to get creative, hit the pavement, and be open and honest with the community that you build.

Without your community, you have nothing to support your game.

I’m going to ask for a loan just for marketing… if I die trying, then I will be dead~

No. **You can just make a game and put it on a Steam**. There is nothing preventing that.

Your game might be just shitty and people are not playing it, that’s different

  15. Manoreded

Your game on Steam is just a drop in the ocean.

But if your game is legit good you just need to convince, I dunno, a few hundred people to give it a try, and after that word of mouth will do the rest.

And if a few thousand people buy your game, the almighty algorithm might actually start suggesting it to folks.

    Fame is a snowball basically.

No offense but balatro pulled it off, if your game isn’t making it, it just isn’t that indie golden goose.

  17. alexportman

I feel you. I write indie fantasy and it’s like shouting into the void.

if you start with $50 you can aim for a 3x return from that amount. then take the revenue and put it back into marketing. repeat until you have a steady and reasonable cash flow.
