Remember when core count wasn’t important to Intel? Remember when L2 and L3 cache didn’t make a difference according to Intel? Remember when lower power consumption couldn’t possibly perform better? Now here we are with 16 core Intel chips that are fair, they suck up almost 400w and they have pretty ok L2/L3 cache. I guess when AMD makes a 7800X3D with a third of the power, massive amounts of cache and all with 8 cores, they have essentially swapped places with Intel. I wouldn’t be surprised if it cost 3x more to manufacture an intel chip.

It looks like this is the direction nvidia is going to get gains as well.
Context:
– FX-9590: AMD’s hail mary with its Bulldozer architecture. 5 GHz max boost with 220W TDP. Still got consistently outmatched by i5 Haswell CPUs.
