IPS, for my use case (photo and video editing) curved is not a good option, but I also wouldn’t go with an ultrawide. I like having two displays that I can reposition easily with one in the center for my work, and one offset to the side for large previews.

I used the 40″ you have there. I love it. You do need a decently deep desk to have it the correct distance from you, but its a great monitor. I do development work + gaming on it, and its great for both.

34+ inches I’d suggest it being curved. Make sure it’s at least IPS

Honestly, anything 34 inches and up should be curved. Flat panels at that size are odd and the curve really helps keep things in your field of vision.
I also wouldn’t go with a 40 inch 3440×1440 monitor, it won’t look as sharp as a 34 inch since it’ll have lower pixel density.
Go with a 34 inch curved IPS and call it a day.

Gigabyte M34WQ. $350-$400 34” IPS would be the best choice for a budget IPS ultrawide. I prefer curve personally and would go with the Dell S3422DWG which is VA and is around $350-$400 as well. Those are really the two monitors you should be deciding between at that price range.

I have a nano-ips from LG and never want to go back. The only thing i would switch it out for would be an OLED but damn nano ips gets close to it.
But you should make your own priority list. I personally have a minimum requirement list for my monitors. My minimum spec list for a monitor nowadays is qhd, curved, 144hz, nano-ips, 34″, gsync compatible. I also prefer LG panels (panels, not monitors, although i am happy with my lg monitor atm)

34 inches is fine without a curve, I have a minimal 1900R on mine and it doesn’t bother me ever, even when watching movies. You don’t notice it when viewing head on.
But I’d imagine 40 is bit too big to not be curved. At that resolution, I wouldn’t go for it anyway, 34 works fine.

I have 3 OMENs a 27k (main), a 27q (left) and a 34c (right) with the latter being obviously WQHD, PVA and curved. I can’t easily tell between the 27q and 34c though. (despite the 27q being IPS). Might be that OMEN Hub drives them at similiar specs…

I just switched to an ultrawide and it’s so much more immersive for games. I personally wouldn’t fuss over panel types as long as the specs you care about are good enough for your use case.

In this price class I’d pick VA over IPS any time. Colors aren’t significantly worse on the VA, but blacks/contrast are hugely better. IMO IPS is only really worth it in high end screens, in midrange screens VA outperforms it most of the time. And if I went high-end, I’d go straight for OLED.
Got a Gigabyte G34WQC a few years back with a 3440×1440 VA panel and it’s been great. Even outperforms my old Dell U2715H IPS in terms of colors… But ever since I got a 3K OLED notebook, I wanna grab a LG C3 42″ and throw the ultrawide out. Bank account says no, however.
