Ultimately Microsoft destroyed themselves. They sold almost 90 million Xbox 360’s and with one E3 press conference, Don Mattrick destroyed the brand and they’ve never recovered since.

Playstation and Nintendo are selling well into the 100 million units and Xbox will never get there again.

I’m not getting another Xbox console after the last one.

One X, series x, they were just hardware upgrades and with the s/x split, greed is so in control of things they couldn’t possibly make a new console like they use to, where they would have to wait for people to buy it.

  3. Trajen_Geta

You know to make a successful game company, you should probably be focusing on games. They stopped doing that and just tried buying up the market and adding bloat to their hardware. Nintendo figured it out years ago, make good games and characters and the people will pay for the consoles to play it.

  4. Active-Cow1337

Make same games and focus on PC gaming and cloud.

  5. Psy_Kikk

Their approach has always been completely wrong. Gaming is about nurturing artistic creations and expression. You don’t just money hat your way into good studios, then lean on them to produce whatever the suits metrics say will reurn their investment in the fastest possible way.

Sony know this (or knew this, their recent flirting with ‘live service’ suggests they might have to **re-learn it again** over the next couple of years). Gaming isn’t reliable for investors. Great games come out of left-field all the time, and creativity is the life blood of industry. It’s not a reliable return – you can make stacks if you put your money on the right horse, but knowing which horse is a guessing game.

They’ve never really embraced capital G gamers like Sony (and Nintendo) have. And yes, I get this demographic is running joke on reddit. But you (M$) can’t afford for it to be a running joke in your business when these are the people you rely on to be successful.

They already confirmed there’s another one that will be incredibly high powered, as far as home consoles ago.

And their market was always going to be depreciated due to the fact nearly all of their games are on PC.  I’ve dithered a few times on buying a console this gen, but if I did, it almost certainly wouldn’t be an Xbox since I have all the same titles and capabilities (and droves more) on my PC.  Nintendo and, to a lesser extent PS, are different in that they a) have exclusive titles and b) have different hardware features.

Looking back to their success with the 360 (and original Xbox), there were two differentiators: exclusive games, cutting edge hardware (at least at launch, these consoles were basically enthusiast-level PCs).

  8. EaseofUse

They really had a decade-long head start on the type of online gaming western audiences are desperate for. Not only a technical advantage, but they actually geared things towards that audience, where even Sony wasted years hoping the Japanese market would somehow copy&paste their priorities on the rest of the world.

To be in this position, at a time when battle royals and other all-online formats are printing money, seems humiliating. They failed at cultivating a market and they *really* failed at manipulating their market share, despite being owned by a corporation richer and more powerful than many small countries.

It’d be great if a new company could find traction in the market. We need competition that isn’t the same old companies.

  10. subarubro

I used to be a huge Xbox fan and I have only used my Series X a handful of times since I bought it years ago. My PS5 has gotten a HUGE amount of use. I will not be buying another Xbox again.

  11. I want Xbox to continue. Without it, there’s less competition. Other companies are less motivated to make better consoles.

That said, there’s not a ton of exclusives that make it attractive to own an Xbox. Halo is not the system seller that it once was. And apparently MS is not going to make Activision/Blizzard and Bethesda games Xbox-exclusives forever.

  12. zosorose

It’s a shame where Xbox went. They just don’t have the games.

Halo was/is one of my all-time- favorite franchises, and it has been handled horribly since Bungie left in 2010.

Aside from that, they have Gears (which is rarely released and not a must- have), Forza, and Flight Simulator

Forza is a niche thing, Flight Simulator is not a game (although it is awesome) Sure, they bought Bethesda, but Starfield isn’t a must- play, either

I went from N64 and GameCube to Xbox in around 2002. Got a 360, One, and Series S, too. The 360 was phenomenal, the One was a huge letdown. I wouldn’t have a current gen Xbox if it wasn’t for the Series S. It is a superb deal, and I’ll give them that. Still, I switched to PS5 for my main console and it is night and day-

Ghost, Horizon, Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, Spider- Man, and GT

    Solid

  13. MassLuca007

As a PC player, Xbox is a super nice casual console to have on a TV. I have a series S and haven’t had any issues with games that I’ve tried. I know Starfield runs badly but I’m not trying to play a AAA game on my console when I have a nice PC. Sports games, action games and especially old gen games run very well. Alot of old games have 4k support too which is nice

Plus I pay for one subscription to have all these games at my disposal. Super nice.

I don’t really care for PlayStation games, all the ones id play are on PC now and I still haven’t played them lmfao

  14. spaceraingame

I thought Microsoft already confirmed they’re going to release a new Xbox next gen?

  15. Jhawk163

Microsoft has always sold their consoles at a loss, and made up for it in game sales. My concern if they stop making consoles is Sony will have a monopoly, the Switch and a PC don’t fill the exact space a proper console does. Sony could sell Playstations at break-even or jack up dev-tool licensing fees and there wouldn’t really be anything anyone could do. Considering they are already the ones championing $70 games, this honestly seems likely.

  16. MikeLanglois

Man that hasnt worked at Xbox since 2007, spoke to IGN who havent liked Xbox since 2007, about an article that puts Xbox in a bad light?

    Im shocked.

  17. akodoreign

I will press X to doubt.

Xbox is now the GamePass machine of the living room. It moves subs. they will move more and more to streaming but at least for near future the xbox is the dream of webtv MS had in the 90’s

  18. HG21Reaper

MSFT will probably make another Xbox duo with one being a Steam Deck like console that can be dockable and another one that is a high powered beast that will further blur the lines between console and PC.

  19. mamadovah1102

I am primarily a PlayStation player but would be really bummed to see Xbox stop making consoles. If I could afford it I would definitely have both. I just want to experience games.

  20. Apostinggod

This isn’t news, this is a guys opinion.

  21. Buttman1145

I’m just a bit confused with Xbox, didn’t MSFT buy a bunch of studios and build hype given the thought was there’s be a lot of games to come?

Maybe it was a goal to go PC and focus on software, remains to be seen.

Always figured physical home consoles were maybe something that wouldn’t last forever as we get to cloud gaming, but figured we were still 5-10 years away before tech and software support got to that point. Axing Xbox now seems sad. Also as a brand feel like it’s such a big presence still

  22. Twin_Titans

Microsoft doesn’t want to play the game they joined. They’re loosing in the market and they want to bait the other into playing a different game. When were they most successful? 2005-2010. What were they doing at that time? They played the game the other big boys were playing. Software sells hardware, and the more hardware, the more software you can sell.

How do you sell hardware? Give the market what they are asking for. Stop trying to push them into something they don’t want. That mentality really began with the massively long lifespan of the 360, and the joke that was XBOX ONE.

Clean up your toys and go home Microsoft. You’re done here.

  23. UncomfortableReview

Will be bad for both sides of the fence. Monopolies are never good for the consumer.

  24. gbdarknight77

It really is crazy. The 360 is my favorite console of all time but I went straight to PS4 and now PS5 as my main consoles after the 360.

  25. ItsLCGaming

Course ign reports this bet they are salivating at the possibility

  26. roygbpcub

If they were to make the next Xbox closer to the steam machine/steam deck where it can play a bunch of the keyboard and mouse games I’d buy it.

  27. Sauceboss319

Competition is key for industry excellence. Xbox being no more is bad for everyone

  28. Thinking about the bigger picture: if Sony isn’t satisfied with PS5 sales, despite outselling XSX 2:1, that’s concerning. I’m really afraid we’re inexorably heading into an all-streaming era because yes, it’s true, people wanna optimize time, money and space as much as they can, more than in any other gaming era and consoles are perceived to be cumbersome, somehow redundant objects. I got both a PS5 and an XSX, and they’re proudly put on display in my set up, I love them as design objects as much as proper gaming hardware, but it feels like the new generations truly won’t give a damn anymore. So yeah… mobile is gonna be the way unless console pull off something absolutely revolutionary (but what?) out of their hats, unfortunately.

  29. deanolavorto

I love Xbox and have always favored them over Ps. But since Covid and getting a PS5 my Xbox series x has been nothing more than an entertainment hub for my daughters and apps. I stopped gamepass as well. Been playing nothing but PlayStation. Really wish Xbox had some great exclusives.

  30. Enreekay

Their naming convention for the Xbox is God awful! I don’t even know what’s their latest console, is it the X or Series S or Series X or One? It’s confusing….

  31. H3LLJUMPER_177

I still won’t ever buy a Playstation. The community seems toxic af after seeing them go rabid on Twitter.

  32. CreateorWither

In my opinion they probably don’t. We’ll likely get one more gen then that’ll be it. Nintendo will likely last the longest unless they start putting games on steam.

  33. wrestlingchampo

None of this really makes sense IMO

So Microsoft dumps $68.7 Billion into their acquisition of Activision Blizzard, only to stop making consoles? I get people’s issues with not having enough First-Party Exclusive games that are top notch, but in order to accomplish that, they have to give these gaming studios time and resources to make said exclusive games.

  34. jntjr2005

This article is just some old Xbox lead speculating on what Xbox may or may not be doing, it’s fluff.

  35. escudoride

So sets is no more. And Xbox may be no more. I see a common denominator here. Peter fucking Moore.

  36. Thelastfirecircle

They never recovered from Don Mattrick shit in 2013.

  37. This isn’t surprising, honestly. Microsoft is seeing a lot more value in game services and developing a studio portfolio than releasing hardware. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing for the future of gaming, but I suppose time will tell.

  38. The president that shitted on the Xbox brand sinking it? Yeah, he needs to shut the fuck up
