Does this anime set the standards for cyberpunk in anime? I’m an anime fan and seen a small amount of content. But are there any films or shows that come before this that better represent the cyberpunk genre? Or is this considered the best?

It’s a different type of Cyberpunk, but I think Bubblegum Crisis (mainly 2032 but also 2040) have been pretty influential on the Cyberpunk genre as a whole.

I’m not sure if there’s much value in pointing to one thing and saying “this is the best representation of the cyberpunk genre”, but if you have to, I’d say it’s arguable between Ghost in the Shell and Akira.

Serial Experiments Lain is also pretty high up there on the cyberpunk scale imo, and Texhnolyze is pretty interesting as well. I’d give honorable mentions to Megazone 23 and Appleseed as well.

This is like asking does LOTR set the standard for fantasy writing. It borrowed heavily from previous works and I’m sure the Tolkien’s would also say it’s not the “best fantasy representation ever written, but it’s pretty good”. JRR would probably talk about Norse mythology, Beowulf, King Solomon, St. George, Sir Gawain, etc. all being influences.

The best of us ride on the shoulders of those who came before.
