it’s kind of hard not to given they have an established background and name.
At no point are you *insert name* of *custom/unknown background*.
You’re always Vincent/Valerie, the corpo/nomad/street kid.

Yep. I even try to keep my V looking kinda similar and acting similar in the beginning.
MadHanini
Yes and no, i know my female V isn’t the same of the trailers (physically) but i make my V the best character of the game! And i like the results, is exactly what i understand about V since the trailer.
(Spoiler) and for me, V kill herself in the end of the game and that’s my canon. And that’s why this is one of the best games ever created!
MidunestiNaneTurtle
It’s like 50% my own character, 50% a pre-estabilished character for me
ThAtGuY-101
No. They’re what I want them to be. I always change their appearances, outfits, give them whatever combat style I want and choose dialogue on a whim. I did it for Geralt too. Sure, the canon characters may speak and act certain way, but in my playthroughs that’s the last thing running through my head.
MadameDecay
Yes and no. Like parts of V are established, but other parts are up to the player.
gigglephysix
tried to. but can’t, the difference between the temporarily embarrassed Dex and hail Lilith actual me is too astronomically vast even WITH Johnny.
Ja3ob427
I try to play it like it’s an entirely custom character but it def seems like he’s supposed to be more of a pre established character.
Illasaviel
Yes and no. To me the pre-established things are the backgrounds, but I always see V as my V. EEssentially V is a role filled in by the character I create.
I think whether a character is pre-established or not only really matters for situations in which there is a canon denouement to the game events, which is not the case in Cyberpunk. Because of this, there is no storyline more official than any other, and no V more canon than any other.

But they are. You can’t really affect their choices or personality, same with Geralt
My V said/did things i didn’t agree with but had no choice
Hexnohope
Its better this way.
AvarethTaika
For sure. It’s even hinted that V has specific likes and interests, like preferring Sain Russeau or the Lexington pistol.
Psigun
Yes, that’s what they are
AscendedViking7
Yes, and that’s because V *is* a pre-established character.
LordMarvic
At this point they ARE a pre-established character in my mind because I have my favorite version of their story.
Kwisatz_Haderach90
I was reflecting on the same conundrum just yesterday, i’d say he’s kind of a vase, you can pour yourself (or whatever you want him to be), but it still has a pre-established shape.
Apprehensive_Ad_8115
Pretty much, it’s not my story. I just control how it ends.
Vidistis
They practically are a pre-established character, so yeah. It’s why I hope the next Cyberpunk game is closer to the tabletop and lets us make our own character, Cyberpunk:Red lifepath system, and silent protagonist.
thefreedomfry
I wouldn’t have played it if V felt premade. Video games are the only form of media that give their audience any sort of control over the story and I think it’s important that developers are conscience of that when they make their game. If I wanted a story I can’t control I’d watch a movie or read a book.
All of this goes double for RPGs. I never beat the first Witcher because I never connected with, or cared about Geralt. If I’d been allowed to make my own character I’d have at least finished it. I certainly wasn’t going to stick around for the gameplay.
I’m not saying all premade characters are bad but because of the medium I hold them to a different standard. That’s just my own weird take on things though.
