
In Cyberpunk 2077, given that almost everyone uses metal implants, couldn’t powerful magnets disrupt the cyberware, potentially killing the user?
The abundance of cyberware and metal in the game would mean that most people walking near anything metal could be in potential danger. Also, what if someone just walked about carrying a super magnet, wouldn’t it likely kill everyone in its range lol?

There already exists non magnetic metal alloys AND emp resistant technology. Maybe at first it was a problem, but nothing impedes tech from evolving past those problems very swiftly

There are non-ferrous metals, and as such wouldn’t be attracted even by a strong magnet.
And that’s assuming that they’re fully metal, and aren’t largely made up of plastic and such.

EMP’s would be dangerous, hence it’s a burn/combat effect in game. But that’s not given off by a regular magnet itself.
Titanium is already a very popular metal used in implant prosthetics. It is very strong, very light, and non-ferrous.
Chrome is not magnetic 🙂

I mean, we live in a highly technologically dependent world, and we have magnets, and we get along fine.
Magnets were only really ever super damaging to HDDs and CRTs anyways.

There are lots of non magnetic metal, as well as tech that stops magnetism. We see the concept going back all the way to the old Spider-Man movies where doc ock had arms impervious to heat and magnetism
There is an interview I saw a long while ago near the reveal of the game where the devs stated that they wanted to include magnetic items and abilities. After discussing it with their medical consultants, they came to the conclusion that it would be complicated and will likely cause harm to the user and bystanders so it was ultimately scrapped from the game
Ok a) ferromagnetic materials….there are only 3. Co Ni Fe. Cyberware is Si and C and maybe a bit of Ti. b) hard drives are indeed sensitive when it comes to magnets, but I guess 2077 is around 3 levels above the techlevel of SSDs….should be fine.
magnets dont really damage most electronics, neither does static or even high voltage.
you can build in protections for a LOT of different things in electronics. lots of military grade shit is virtually indestructible.
allowing for massive advancements of technology it would become a non issue like magnets already are for newer types of storage.
No part of a computer has to be ferrous and you wouldn’t want non stainless steel in your body anyway as it would rust and kill you anyway.

Most chrome is made of ceramics by that point, or high strength polymers with titanium or whatever for structure. Ferrous metals are not biocompatible.
Everyone is speaking about non ferrous metal, but forget that electricity is still affected by magnets
I don’t know the answer, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen signs in game warning about microwaves being in use, I assume it affects cyberware.
As if Cyberpunk RED, set in 2045, it’s not uncommon for people to purchase additional EMP protection for their cyberware. Whilst this does imply that particularly strong magnetic fields can interfere with the operation of at least some cyberware, it also implies that such issues are of minimal practical concern.
Very strong EMPs designed to shut down cybernetics can be stopped by a purchasable upgrade, and as such any magnets that most people could get a hold of are likely unimportant. Notably, even if you were hit by an EMP, this mechanically only disables cyberware temporarily, and some cyberware is only neutered not disabled- for instance, cyberlimbs begin to act just like regular limbs.
No, but electromagnets like the one you have in your microwave could be, even if the metal isn’t ferromagnetic.

I’d wager for most people the strongest magnet they ever owned was inside their HDD. Which is also a device quite susceptible to malfunction due to magnetism.
It just ain’t like that. It would probably be a concern like stay away from those really strong magnets that pickup cars in junk yards.
Consider pacemakers today. You need to stay away from magnets. Why? There is a defined interaction. There is a switch that is meant to be flipped with a strong magnet to put the pacemaker into a different mode. To actually mess with the pacemaker in an undefined way would require a very strong magnet.
Then you have time varying magnetic fields you can create with electromagnets. Basically getting into EMP territory. Bigger problem for sure. Much like guns and bombs are a problem but you could get away with using it more covertly than either of those.

In theory, it would be a risk.
That said, you can do a fair bit even with careful circuit design to reduce the risks of magnets or EMPs and the like damaging or disrupting a system. On top of that systems can be specifically hardened against such damage.
I would expect this to be a major area of research if cybernetics were deployed like they are in universe. Countering these protections would also be a major research area, but at the end of the day there’d be a decent chance you’d be OK. Routine sources of this sort of damage would be covered by baseline protections, and extra hardening available if you’re going to be facing an enhanced threat.

Not in this reality or ours really. I think the biggest trouble would only be mild to temporary interference disruption in data transmission.
Even now flash memory or the type of storage USB or an SSD uses is made with non ferrous materials and won’t erase data like it might of in platers back in the day. All other metals would be non ferrous highly conductive non corrosive precious metals like gold or platinum.
From a metal structure standpoint also no, because most implants these days are cast or 3D printed in Stainless 316L, 304L, or Ti6al4v which are austenitic with high chromium and nickel content and low ferrous magnetism, and Titanium is also non ferrous and unaffected. So it would have to an extremely high electromagnetic surge to do damage rather than what you are inferring.

Electromagnets powered by 500hp engines have a range of 2 feet.

Typically, surgical steel is not magnetic. I would assume this would be the case for cyberware.
