If I had to choose, I’d prefer a remake in the style of the one for *Trials of Mana*. Full 3D, voice acting, cutscenes, maybe some other improvements… The battle system would be the same but with 3D models, and the world map could remain in 2D to simplify things. *Trials of Mana* didn’t “need a remake” in my opinion, either, but it doesn’t mean a remake can’t be good and a way to experience the game differently. Please stop with the “it isn’t needed” pseudo-argument; you don’t need half the things you like, including the original *Chrono Trigger*.

The final fantasy pixel remasters are a really good example for things to do, and things not to do. Go read the user feedback for those, and take notes, and take it seriously. There were a lot of things people loved about those games, and a lot of things people hated. Treat it as a textbook.

I’m not sure why people are so set on wanting a HD-2D remake. Chrono Trigger is one of the crown jewels in the Squaresoft crown. I want a full, proper remake if they are going to do it.
I’d get the Dragon Quest team to work on it. DQ11 was fantastic, has gameplay that isn’t that far from what they’d need to achieve with Chrono Trigger, and obviously has a modern interpretation of the Toriyama aesthetic that works really well. All the tools are there for them now to do it proper justice.

Whatever they put out, I would buy it. I’d be a bit concerned the game would lose its identity in 3D. Final Fantasy 7 works because the original game felt constrained by technology of its time. Chrono Trigger on the other hand feels like the peak of 2D RPG’s. And the way its levels and locations were designed was around 2D.

CT is one of those few games that is really impervious to age. Even now, it’s very playable.
And the strength of CT wasn’t the story. The story is pretty basic, to be honest. Most of the characters are stereotypes, not characters. The strength was the gameplay, the music, and the game design, and the lovely pixel work.
If you’re going to remake it with new gameplay and art and music, why not just make a new game? A game that may be better than CT? Or worse if you can’t recruit the talent? Either way, it won’t sully our memories of it. And we may even get new memories of a new good game.
