I legitimately think it would lose some of it’s magic. Not even for nostalgia reasons, I just think there’s a timelessness about the way the game was made that would be lost with big cinematics, etc.
As others have said though a 2D HD game would slap.

There’s only 3 styles I could accept a remake of this in,
* PS1 style with pre-rendered backgrounds
* HD Pixel remaster
* 3D art leaning heavily into the Akira Toriyama style
I think a remake would be entertaining if Akira Toriyama did all the art.

Dragon quest 11 is an example of how it could look, considering those characters are also from Toriyama.
If they ever make a full remake, I’d hope for a complete revamp a la ff7. Just upgrading the graphics a bit is just not worth it, game looks great as is

Chrono Trigger is special because everything about it comes together perfectly. That’s including graphics, audio, story, and arguably even the wonky translation. Render everything in modern 3D graphics and you lose 90% of the charm present in the sprites and their animations, not to mention the beautiful backgrounds. Remaster the OST and you fundamentally change the feel of the game. Change anything about the story to lengthen or expand it, and you lose the pitch-perfect pacing of the original narrative along with its energy.
It’s a fool errand. I’m normally not a purist when it comes to this kind of thing, but Chrono Trigger is an exception because the game is just exceptional in every way I can think of.
