Why Do Controller Cables Have These?

I think in case you tug on the cord, the controller disconnects easily without pulling your whole console down off a shelf or destroying a port.

Its a breakaway design. If it receives strain (for example someone tripping on the cable) its supposed to disconnect and not damage anything.

  3. MillieChliette

“breakaway cable” so the console doesn’t come crashing down off of your entertainment center if someone trips on the cord.

  4. MaximumNecessary

Breakaway cable mitigates damage to your console or controller if someone trips or yanks on the cable.

So you can plug them into a submarine šŸ˜

  6. Oblic008

So when you rage and throw it, you only break the controller, not everything else connected to it.

  7. IamRatthew

I think it is a fail safe breakaway, to prevent the cord from yanking the console off your shelf and damaging it.

  8. NoticeImaginary

Like everyone else has said it’s a breakaway design similar to gas pumps. The only controllers I’ve seen these on were the OG Xbox which I always figured was because the console was so massive.

  9. Adventurous_Doubt

I believe some of the Xbox 360 controllers had this, but I might be mistaken.

When i was younger, my brother would trip on my controller cable, rip the PS2 off the wall unit and break it. went through a few PS2s because of it. The quick disconnect makes it so the cable snaps in half instead of ripping the consol to the floor.

  11. Tea-Mate

Don’t understand why no one said that already, but that is breakaway design. So if someone yanks or trips on the cable it won’t cause any damage.

Breakaway cable and it can also use extensions if you want to be further away from your tv

  13. FlukeylukeGB

far cheeper to replace if you or your pet fall over it than a £600 console or £60 controller
Not to mention that the quick disconnect mostly means no damage is done to itself anyway so it can be reused many times
the amount of times these saved my xbox from my dog back in the day is far too many to count…

  14. johnthefig

My OG Xbox had light up controllers with this breakaway. Wish I remembered who made them

  15. Strange_Dream_8790

My thrust master steering wheel has one I assume it will break there if you accidentally step on it

  16. Arkimaru

You obviously didn’t have younger siblings lol

  17. christhen1

Isn’t it just an usb to xbox360 adapter so you can use the controller on your computer?

  18. dondashall

I think this is a “your controller” issue rather than a controller issue as I’ve never seen that. All that said, I do use controllers for PC so this could be a console controller thing.

  19. Seigmoraig

In addition to what others have said about it being a break away cable, there’s also a fuse in the cylinder in the middle of the cable so if that pops you can just change the break away part

  20. Davilyan

The youth of today haven’t had the lovely experience of ā€œmom walking in front of the tv and playing skipping rope with controller cableā€.

  21. AnInsaneMoose

    2 reasons

    A) to prevent you from yanking your console down

    B) to plug into a computer with the right port

  22. lazymutant256

This is called s break away cable.. it was used on the og Xbox. It’s so if you end up tripping g on the cord the cable will split apart instead of dragging the console off the shelf

  23. As mentioned, it’s a breakaway so you don’t send the entire console crashing to the floor or break the controller port if you trip over the cable.

Another benefit was back when controllers had large proprietary plugs, getting an extension cord that fit between the breakaway was cheaper and smaller than one that fit over the plug and ran between the plug and the console

  24. FormedComprehension

This question makes. Me feel old

  25. mathaiser

Everyone saying it’s a breakaway cable, that’s fine, but why add the little piece? Why not just make the regular cable brake away this easy and skip a step.

  26. supergarr

Stability I assume. I’ve had quite a few phone cables fray over time and it’s annoying. Even happened to my snes controllers back in the day (probably from tugging as I sat back on the couch though)

  27. Exceed_SC2

It’s a breakaway cable, it’s in case the cord is tugged on, it disconnects instead of yanking the console

  28. bangbangracer

It was a safe breakaway point. It makes more sense if you are from the age when wireless controllers weren’t the norm.

  29. FuckGiblets

So my mother could steal them all when wanting to punish me as a child.

  30. I wish my controller had this cable. Can’t find it anywhere.

  31. Muttandcheese

Oh, you’re so young my friend. The Xbox classic (1st gen) was so god damn heavy that there was literally a warning about it falling on and crushing children and small pets right in the official documentation that came with it. Because of this, they instituted the ā€œbreak away cordā€ for safety, and later models had extra pieces removed to reduce the weight of the thing. Let me tell you brother, this beast was HEAVY in 2001.

In case you accidentally pull the cord, so that the weakest point that would disconnect is the one that actually supposed to disconnect.
