I’m not sure if it counts but something similar to this from years ago was the Crusader series (No Remorse and No Regret), really really loved those games.

For me, Invisible Inc. slightly edges out XCom, followed by Into the Breach. Advance Wars is a favorite, but maybe consider it general strategy.
For anyone interested in Invisible, Inc, Out of curiosity, I looked it up on Switch (I play on PC) and it’s 75% off, $4.99. ABSOLUTELY worth that price.

Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, always. It’s that perfect blend of excellent story, gameplay, art, music, and characters. And map design that is (mostly) so good I still knew it by heart when I replayed it a decade later.

Advance wars, OG XCom, and the Tactics ogre series Because the minimalistic Story, Pokemon Conquest pretty up thrte too
Least liked Digimon Survive and Triangle . Too much meaningless reading and cutscenes. But its still my favourite genre I just can’t hate any of these games.
Valkyrie Chronicles was pretty fun too as a tactics turn based real time hybrid

After that maybe XCOM 2.

Tactics ogre let us cling together on PSP. I had a blast playing that game and while the gameplay may not be anything like today’s standard (baldur’s gate 3 for example) I really like its dark story back then and most of its characters.

The original Xcom from the 90s. Punishing as hell on higher difficulties.
JA2 v 1.13 is also a good one. It’s a bit old but I remember playing it alot a decade back.
Door kickers series really brings out the tactics planning in you and it’s cool to see it all come together.

Enjoyed Wastelands 3 but it was difficult at times. Didn’t cheat or use guides/builds.

Final Fantasy Tactics is still a full tier above any other in the genre over 25 years after its release.

Just finished playing xcom 2. It was amazing. Before that my favourite was Battle Brothers

Disgaea saga!

Xcom 1 and 2 (the Firaxis ones) => I discovered XCOM:EU and the turn based tactical genre totally by fortune when i bought Bioshock Infinite. With it was included XCOM:EU and Civ V. ended up loving the laters, and played Bioshock much much later (and did like it much).
Hard West 2 => Loved the unique powers of each character
Jagged Alliance 3 => loved the real time infiltration

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I find it a bit more charming than the original and always loved the inclusion of all the different races like the Vierra, Moogles, etc.

I received WarHammer40K’s Machanicus for free through Epic and I’ve been really enjoying it. It gives me that intense “just one more” feeling until I have to force myself to stop and go to bed.
