99%? Okay bruh… Let me just pull a number out of my ass. Does he also think that advanced technology isn’t a political statement? Also, that whole beginning bit the church on the Relic is religious politics.

Media illiteracy sucks
rukh999
Did he see all the in-game commercials and just go “yeah that just seems like decent normal marketing”?
GoodMan_1996
>99% cyberpunk media has no politics
can I get the list tho
santicode
Yeah, that’s why it has the word “punk” in it
therrubabayaga
Yes, technology took over by itself. Absolutely no politics were involved to attain such a state.
Everybody woke up one day, and pouf, cyberpunk everywhere. No human decisions at all.
I don’t know if you can even call that stupidity at this level.

His evidence that it wasn’t a critique of capitalism was JOHNNY FUCKING SILVERHAND
EinFahrrad
No, no, no – you got it all wrong. This is an as of yet poor attempt by a nascent aspect of our future AI overlord to ease us into a new reality. See all that cyberpunky shit around you? That just happened, no need to question anything. Here, have a new BD. It’s cool, believe me.
66watchingpeople66
It’s like they played the game but didn’t actually understand anything that was being said. Did they skip every conversation, and refused to read any of the shards?

Another Corpo-Scum I see :3
JHStarr4
Lol, Johnny’s monologue after finding Helllman is literally that the corpos take everything, farms, homes, jobs, money, and now even your soul! Lol. The entire genre has always been a metaphor for current real world corruptions.
ShreikenChiken
I think hes having trouble
bratisla_boy
And Johnny wants to destroy that technology because?
Because of what?
Could it be that he didn’t want this technology used by, I don’t know, utter corporate greed that will drive humanity to a disaster? And maybe he plainly explained it in *multiple* discussions along the game?
I like cyberpunk a lot, and among the reasons there is the fact that devs didn’t forget the punk in the cyberpunk genre. This gamer obviously doesn’t want to see this.
(reminds me a bit how Hugo awards were hijacked by people who “didn’t want to have politics in SF – ie””woke “” themes… I won’t look at what this person is thinking in his other tweets but I have a hunch )

IAmASquidInSpace
Did somebody check on William Gibson? I’m afraid if he ever reads this, the man’s gonna have an aneurysm.
Rafaelis75
Corpos are literally universally hated by everyone in Night City, regardless of gang affiliation. The entire premise of the main story is their unaccountable class warfare on everyone else. Johnny Silverhand brings it up several times. And lots of other NPCs take jabs at them too. If people can play through Cyberpunk without grasping something as unsubtle as its critique of Capitalism, is it any wonder people vote for Trump because they believe he’s for the “little guy”? What a complete failure of critical thinking.

And this, children, is why media literacy is important.

Bro didn’t even know about Mikoshi at the time, lol.

He’s not entirely wrong tbh. Johny himself says he’s fighting against entropy. You have to be able to grasp nuance to understand cyberpunk isn’t saying “capitalism bad”. By doing that, you’re ignoring the themes of greed, corrupt government & deep internal plots, mass consumerism combined with traditional values completely disappearing. Everything I just listed can occur in any system of government. Araska, despite being a megacorp and the #1 antagonist, doesn’t even have a capitalist philosophy for their company.
Bobert891201
Yeah, he clarifies that he bombed the tower because Alt was taken by Arasaka. He says he “did it” for her.
But he also goes into multiple rants about Arasaka and Militech and how evil they are, about how they take everything and destroy what’s left for money. In fact, even goes on to say that he deserted Arasaka because he could see what they were doing.
Someone please, correct me if I’m wrong here.

u/therealmaxmike, wanna weigh in on this?

I guess I can understand where they’re coming from. Saying Johnny is “anti-corporation” is almost the same as saying he is “anti-capitalism,” but the only problem with that is that Johnny is clearly not anti-capitalist. I think anti-corpo is a better term because that’s not a critique on capitalism. It’s a critique of what capitalism becomes if left unchecked. The polar extreme of capitalism. Capitalism isn’t the problem, it’s people 🤷
Trashk4n
I’d say it’s more anti-corporatist
rustys_shackled_ford
My favorite internet thing is for people whove seemingly never played the game, accuse everyone else of never playing the game…

Meanwhile average Cyberpunk 2077 player, who is appaled that the game was called “not anti-capitalist”:
sitting in his $500 gamer chair, with at least 2 screens, high-end PC, pre-ordered the game, and will pre-order the next one too. Literally worshiping a corporation for creating a game, and will defend its dubious practices.
P.s.: downvote all you want, you know I’m right. You have nothing to do with anti-capitalist ideas, so don’t pretend you do, just because you played a game, and a character you like is edgy like that.

Capitalism is a cancer and should end. Rich people should not exist. And the working class needs to take the means of production. 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈

Dude, I can’t stand this guy. Went from a decent cyberpunk shorts created I liked to… whatever the hell this is. His most recent videos have had people dunking on him in the comments for his awful takes. He started deleting and hiding a few of mine and other people’s because he can’t handle criticism. Then crys about it on Twitter, saying people are toxic when he’s just making ‘innocent fun videos’.
MorenaLedovec
thats why the game revolves after corpos who can just take our souls and withotu money you are nobody+it has punk in the fucking name

Cyberpunk is to capitalism as anarchy is to liberalism. It takes the core concept to its extreme to point out its flaws.
You cannot say it is anti-capitalist though. Because it does not present an alternative. As seen in the Phantom liberty expansion, the government is worst than the corps.
The future is bleak and hopeless, but humans always manage to find meaning and purpose in life. That’s the real message.
I’m honestly not sure you could miss the point of Cyberpunk as a genre harder if you tried. The fuck drugs is this guy on and where can I get some because it’s the good shit.
