Saints Row desperately needs to go back to its gangbangin’ turf war roots. Saints Row 2 had a perfect balance between Melodrama and not taking itself too seriously. As fun as Saints Row 3 was, it’s the reason why the series is now a parody of itself

The series is dead and Volition was also shut down. It’s going to be a looooooong time before Gearbox dig it up again.

SR2 was the peak for me. Held up surprisingly well on recent replay, too. 3 was fun and I get why some people prefer it. 4 is obviously intentionally over the top, not really my thing, but at least it stayed true to the series. Then there’s the reboot…

Part 2 is like $1.50 on game pass right now

Is Saints Row 3 the reason why the series is a parody of itself… Or is it why the reason why we do get a couple more games instead of the whole series dying under the shadow of GTA?

I’m sorry but I did like both SR3 and SR4. Can’t say the same about Gat out of hell or anything after but c’mon, there’s life beyond SR2.

  5. Volition got fucked by THQ as they went bankrupt. I was there. Forced to ship product that didn’t meet their standards. The 4th game was basically supposed to be DLC iirc. Years later they decided to ship another unready reboot with absolutely garbage writing.

Yep. Saint’s row 2 was great. The best example of a perfect balance between humour and grit that i have seen in a game. I honestly would not mind a remake of 1 & 2.

While the IP will probably just be a great memory, I agree with this take completely. SR2 was the pinnacle for that series. A great “gangsta” game that was funny at moments but still had some of the best action sequences and pacing.

Volition’s original idea for the SR Reboot was going to be (paraphrasing cause I don’t remember exactly) “30% Saints Row 3 and 70% Saints Row 2”

It was unsurprisingly higher ups and management that kept requesting changes and things to be added and removed, I think they even ended up requesting the entire story to be redone

Embracer had shifted Volition under Gearbox, who were doing work to clean up Volition’s management and provide them with proper resources and internally things were looking better… and then Embracer shut them down with no warning because a corporate business deal fell apart and they started scrambling for money

I’d argue that the wackiness of 3 and 4 is the only reason Saints Row was able to find its own niche separate from the monstrous shadow of GTA.

I loved 2, and it holds up decently well (when you can get it to run), but I can see why people would dismiss it as a GTA clone without a deeper look.

But the company is bankrupt because of the flop of the saints row reboot. So it’s never going to happen.

  11. Loved this game, the stuff you could do in the world combined with the customization and variety of mini games was so fun

Played 2 again recently. Still so much fun. Much more fun than GTA4 in my opinion. GTA4 did have some better aspects but fun wasn’t one of them

It’s because it wanted to be “wacky” like GTA: Ballad Of Gay Tony was.

That’s what ruined GTA as well. Squeakers loved how colorful and wacky/crazy TBoGT was so that’s why GTA V made Trevor so “crazy” and Quirky

Big facts. 3 was a fun game, but not a good Saints Row game.

2 was easily the best of the series. I sank hours into it when it first came out. There was this co-op mission where you had to escort your buddy or something like that, and the attack helo was perfect for it. Absolute blast of a game!

  16. sr4 was great. it stopped trying to parody gta and just went in on everyone. keith david was amazing as well in that game

I had so much fun with saints row 2. And I enjoyed how many building you could actually enter including the underground mall.

  18. Saints row 1 online had no business being as fun as it was.

Protect the pimp was one of the best game modes I’ve ever played

The series is dead, alongside Volition. Though I’m sort of hopeful Gearbox might revive the ip once GTA6 drops and becomes the next biggest thing.

  22. Flangian

They tried that and killed the franchise lol

SR2 was awesome for young GTA-loving me. Would love a remake.

    *Sigh.*

SR2 was the real deal, man! These corporations just don’t get what made Saints Row great. Gutted about Volition.
