Was trying to repair my dads old laptop. I only see one 4gb stick of RAM but its advertised as 8gb? Am I missing something?

Maybe there’s soldered RAM on the other side of the motherboard?

  2. Maybe it got sent to a sketchy repair shop and got the ram swapped?

Try turning it on and checking how much memory it has in Task Manager. Make sure that 4gb you took out is back in, of course.

One free DIMM slot plus 4GB soldered on the board.

Probably under keyboard. Some laptops do that.

  6. Often laptops have an inaccessible RAM stick and only one can be upgraded.

  7. Soldered RAM infuriates me as an IT Technician.

I’ve had laptops where the soldered ram fails.

It’s double sided ram. The other 4gb is on the other side

    ~~My guess: It is a 32 bit CPU~~

~~If so, it will ever only show up to 4 GB of available RAM, as that is the limit of a 32 bit integer.~~

Oh, nevermind. I read it the wrong way around

Take out the RAM stick and see if 4GB is still advertised?

Or soldered ram, or another bank on the other side.

Sometimes, the other stick is on the other side of the motherboard.

No. Just either removed, or it was
Mislabeled. Could be soldered on one side too hidden. Happens all the time, and it’s old so who knows.

Well yeah, you just said it. You are missing 4gb of ram…

One of the worst trends for laptops in recent years: soldered RAM.

Count yourself lucky you at least have one slot.

DDR4 is old. I’m crying here. There’s no hope for me.

Someone probably scooped the 8gb stick and dropped a 4gb in.

    Sticker does not trump hardware.

You can put a Turbo badge on your car, and it isn’t going to make it a turbo.
