Shadow of Mordor is that game for me. After quitting the game several times, I finally came back to it with full dedication and I’m now progressing smoothly. I still think it’s a boring game with a bland open world, dumb long speeches and annoying movement, but I’m kinda enjoying it somehow and I’ll finish it soon.

Witcher 3.
Had a rough time getting through the start, felt complicated with awkward controls.
But after three times I perservered and…well… Anyone wanna play Gwent?
Dead Rising 2
Happened exactly once. Bloodborne pissed me off so much, I had to drop it. … Just to come back 7 days later after having understood the game’s underlying message of “git gud, scrub”. Absolutely no regrets regarding that masterpiece
Dark Souls
Halo 2
great game just very very frustrating at time’s
9/10
I just fall off of open worlds in general. The best ones aren’t boring per say, but I do eventually get my fill and have to come back.
Mad Max. Eventually got tired of the grind. But recently got back into it and loving it.
Shenmue 3. The game is awful by 2019 standards, the controls were frustrating, the gameplay was monotonous but I had to finish the story for Yu Suzuki.
Counter strike 2
Demon’s Souls. Now I can’t get enough of the Soulsborne games
Red Dead Redemption 2.
Typically I would try the game, get lost or confused on what to do next or how to progress the story. Usually early act 2.
Then my 3rd attempt I gave it a more honest attempt and looked up online how to progress story if I got lost again. Eventually I made it into act 3 and it all kinda clicked.
It’s now a top 3 favourite game and I’m glad I kept trying.
Yakuza 0.
Tried to play through it a bunch of times, but every time it switched to Majima Goro I’d just lose all interest. Two months back I decided to power through it and my dear God was that game phenomenal. Ended up playing through all the games and now I’m on Lost Judgement.
Overwatch a few times…
Dragon Age: Inquisition. Struggled with the combat mechanics at first, quit, then came back after a while. Now totally hooked. Damn those rifts!
RDR2. Played it on release and got really fed up with it, mostly because I thought it’d be more open narratively than it is. Anyway, recently re-downloaded and I’m playing in first person on the PS5 and I love it. I still think it’s the best looking game of all time as well. Ridiculous that no one’s topped this since.
Dark Souls
For Honor
SUFFER ME NOW
I’m hoping that game is Skyrim for me. Every time I start it, once I get past the opening (which takes a good while) I feel overwhelmed with the open world and like I don’t have the time to invest. Maybe it’s time for another go
Horizon Zero Dawn. At first I thought the story was too predictable, but when I started a new game a year later I really enjoyed the characters and the gameplay.
I’m running into the same issue with Horizon Forbidden West right now. It’s frustrating because I really like the world and the gameplay, but the story is so cringe and I don’t care about any of the characters.
Battlefield 2042.
I almost quit when I first started because the gameplay felt so choppy and I kept dying. Turns out I was on graphics mode and not performance mode. Literal game changer lol. It was still choppy and the traversal with climbing can still be dogshit. But it got better and I finished the game. I enjoyed it. Working on the DLC now.
Dating. With so much dedication that I’m married now. But, in all seriousness, I’d say RDO
Worst take on shadow of Mordor I think I have ever read
Deus Ex Human Revolution & Metal Gear Solid
If a Game is that bad that I tried it twice and couldn’t finish it I would never try it a 3rd time.
There are a few games that I tried to do this with but I never actually succeeded. If something frustrated me the first time, it’s only a matter of time until it frustrates me again even if I make it farther.
Baldurs gate 3 actually. I just could not get into it but all my buddies were playing it and kept telling me how much I was missing out so I just literally forced myself to complete act 1 and I am glad I did because that was back in November and it’s had its hooks in me since then.
OP, you should try shadow of war next, shadow of mordor is a kind of proof of concept and the next is the real experience
Death Stranding
Minecraft. Took me about half a decade to beat it.
Spider man (1)
Always thought the beginning segment was boring, but this time I started a save I made after and it clicked like clockwork, even bought the DLC and am trying to 100% it now
