I’ve been thinking a lot about interactions like this and how Final Fantasy Remake uses background chatter instead. I think it loses something.
a lot of games fill their NPCs with useless lines, but the well written line can be hilarious or poetically salient. my favorites being Earthbounds “I’m the sign checker in town and every time I read one I say… CHECKEROONIE!” Or I Am Setsuna’s line wherein a kid staring into a lake says he was friends with a monster child who committed suicide (ostensibly to avoid giving into his burgeoning monster tendencies) and ends with the tear jerking “I still don’t know why he did that.”
