But reddit told me there were no more xboxes?!1!?
bassicallyinsane
The PC I built in 2015 doesn’t have a disc drive. It’s getting to be a pretty dated technology, it’s not necessary, and it’s probably a minority of users who want them. I doubt I’ll ever use the drive on my Series X.
Berkuts_Lance_Plus
As far as rumors go, this one seems believable. Laptops have been doing away with disc drives for quite some time now.
CdnBison
Honestly, just putting a USB port on the next one, and let it be for *any* usb-connection optical drive would be the ideal. Have an ‘official’ version, for people that worry about such things.
Unfortunately that’s likely a dream, and the ‘official’ version would probably require a proprietary connection.
MissLana89
I need a Playstation for the exclusives, but I vastly prefer the user experience on the Xbox so I got a Series X too for basically everything but the sony exclusives. If Microsoft makes the user experience shit again on the Xbox, they’re basically saving me 500 dollars. Thanks I guess?
Matrix17
I won’t buy any console without a disk drive until digital rights are better
condosaurus
I get that the vast majority of users are digital download only these days, probably mostly through Gamepass, but it’s still a little disheartening to see physical media in its death throes. I wonder how long it will be before xbox is just a small cheap box with just enough power to stream games from the cloud.
Atrampoline
That’s a hard pass for me, dawg. I only do physical; no digital purchases in my household.
raiyamo
This sounds like a win. You can get a fully powered console that is cheaper without the drive or with the drive. No weaker system like the Series S.
lorenzoelmagnifico
Playstation allows this as an upgrade on their recent refresh.
MyLifeIsAFrickingMes
Im sorry but fuck that. Half my library is discs
manningthehelm
The next Xbox is a gaming optimized first party mass produced gaming PC.
Lucifer6000
Oh, the sales will be through the roof for that one.
Kanden_27
Last time Xbox sold a disk drive separately was when HDDs were a thing.
goob3r11
That picture looks surprisingly PS5ish
KikonSketches
I mean, games are getting massive and they’re already big, theres no way modern games can be kept om a single disc.
All physical games are now are basically physical keys to prove you bought the game, then downloads the rest of the required files to play and pass signature checks.
I miss when a game just played right out of the box without needing internet to update or download something man😩
modssssss293j
wtf is this thumbnail
MonkeysxMoo35
I mean, I definitely prefer this over no more Xbox at all or an all digital with no option for physical, but I’d also rather just see a disc tray just stay apart of the console and not an add-on
MrTBlood164
Wasn’t it only 3 or 4 days ago I saw articles about the collapse of the Xbox/Microsoft consoles? Yall are all over the place.
foh242
Who cares I have not purchased a physical copy in over a decade.
mikotoqc
Fuck off with rumor god dammit. Wtf is going on? Someone is pissed at MS and decided to make new rumor article every single Day?
SativaPancake
If it does have a sold separately external drive I can easily see some new Xbox exclusive games that are DVD only at launch – marketed as some exclusive pre-digital release ultimate platinum edition. Then once you put the disc in it needs a 50GB+ update to be downloaded
jmk338
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind an external disk drive as long as it’s reliable. I have an external HDD that houses most of my BC 360 game files so I can pop the disk in my series X and play. Having the disk drive external alongside the storage unit would be fine
Albert_dark
I just imagine what absurd name will they give this time.. Xbox Next series z and knucles
zirky
at some point consoles are just going to be gaming pcs with locked specs
sarzec
Where is my wireless discless physical media at?
Mesterjojo
Who needs a disc drive?
Generates heat. Series x does enough of that as it is.
I will say that a disc drive is the only way I had to install l4d 2, though. Missed it when it was in the 360 store.
MoreMegadeth
xD

Lest they decide to move to physical cartridges like the switch, I refuse to buy a console in the digital age where they give and take games on a whim
Nocto
Oh man I hope it also plays HDDVDs.
Jcpowers3
I really like my series s and would love the option to buy a disc drive. I have a series x in another room but being able to play both would be bice
AMasterSystem
They are actually releasing it on an all new proprietary HD VIOLETRAY format.
metallaholic
Time to dust off my hd dvd drive for the 360
Quigs4494
Having the disk drive be external isn’t the worst thing. The ones without a disk drive are less anyway. Having it be a separate component will allow those with a disk to bring or let their friend borrow it if they don’t have one for their Xbox. As it is now if you have a system with the drive you have no way to use that disk on someone who doesn’t have the disk slot.
It would be cool if they took it a step further and had a thing in place to allow the drive to hook up to PC and play the game on there too.
Throwawaymytrash77
Please, for the love of god. Let me play my physical media on a console that doesn’t cost half a grand.
TheVirginJerry
But I thought they were going to delete my library because Starfield is coming to PS5?
thankyoumicrosoft69
Youll own nothing, and youll like it. Buy digital so you cant resell it, make games 80$.
Grizzly_Berry
That’s a green PS5
Tubzero-
Cool, I haven’t bought an Xbox game in awhile
Soulhammer1
I want an internal disc drive. I use my Xbox as blu ray player as well as rent non gamepass games from the library.
wolfannoy
I’m more interested in what type of controller it will have to be honest.
aphilipnamedfry
Wasn’t this kind of a given based off the leaked documents from the FTC stuff with Microsoft and Activision? There was literally a presentation with a console that had no disc drive. Best case scenario was going to be to follow the PS5 Slim footsteps where they give the drive as an addon.
It’s stupid from a consumer perspective, but it’s clearly an attempt to appear to cut costs to the consumers while also reducing the ability for physical content.
FerniWrites
So, the PlayStation Slim way. I can’t fault it. Having a mock up that’s just a slimmer Slim is hilarious. 🤣
Routine-Attention363
Aha just like Play Station
Galadeon
Seems fine. Just buy the drive you want it. I see this as the same as the two PS5 models.

Other set of rumours: “New Xbox coming!”
