I’m honestly a bit of both. I’ll milk the components for as long as possible and when I feel I need an upgrade for a sufficient reason I’ll then look into upgrading a part or two rather than building an entirely new PC.

I’m happy with what I got for now, but I think I will upgrade at least the gpu when the 5090 or whatever is out. If I can’t max everything, I feel like I’m missing out even if I’m not

Initially I just wanted to recase my old prebuilt. Foolishly, I asked MicroCenter sales person if they had any 4090s. They did. Then I just said fuck it and bought all my dream parts and built a brand new PC in about 3 weeks or so.

I don’t get the red pill mindset. It’s hard to know when a part is going to become unusuable so it makes far more sense just to buy it when you need it. After all, the longer you wait the further the tech will have advanced.

I’ll use my magical ability and say you don’t need to upgrade because you have 100s of games on steam you haven’t even played yet and your current system can easily run them at your desired frame rate.

Blue out of need right now, but generally red. X amount of time being so long that there’s actual leap, like DDR4 to DDR5 or similar. I find building computers from scratch and getting to know parts and differences in cooling systems and everything so satisfying after not putting time into knowing everything in normal basis.
E: I feel like I have a fear of buyers remorse or something so I always do exessive research. For example I had to get a new phone and I did over a week of research (probably over 20 hours in total) to choose the one I wanted. Last time I gave it more thought than “that looks nice and has nice specs” was around ten years ago. I miss LG so much.

I upgrade rarely, but when I do it’s normally the very top end components. Until last month I was still running the vega64 I bought in 2018. 7900xtx will keep going until probably 2027 given my upgrade speed.

I’m in the middle personally. I only upgrade when I need to. I used a Sandybridge build overclocked to 4.9ghz for 11 years before finally getting to the point where it was holding me back. Best value CPU ever. It still works to this day btw.
