As a kid I used to love messing with the pause menu on Sly 3 because every time you cycle through an option it plays a sound effect, when you cycle through them rapidly in any direction it creates a pretty cool beat

Goldeneye 64: the wristwatch menu. Absolutely iconic.

The splosion man games take it a step further and play the theme song when scrolling the menu.

I like how prince of Persia sands of time presented it as an oral story. When you pause I think he said something acknowledging it. Then when you unpause, he says “then I shall continue”. Kinda weird and without context, but it all comes together in the end when they reveal the adventure you just played out is actually a story.

Also in before goldeneye watch. While good in theory, with bomb music, frustrating as fuck to die because you stand still and take hits as you look at your watch before time stops. Perfect dark does it better with the hologram UI shining directly into your eye presentation.

The jrpg Terranigma for the SNES had you jump into a pocket dimension and physically walk around to interact with menu elements, swap out gear, use items whenever you pressed start. People would probably hate it today because it’s kinda bulky but it was pretty freaking cool at the time

Okami’s menu was a bunch of Scrolls, genuinely enjoyed the sound effects and art style

I was having a rough time when GTA V released, and the pause menu music always got me.
