Octopath Traveler was co-developed by SE, and SE has the rights to the HD-2D engine and OT IP. It’s not like Aquire can make the next OT without SE.

Square Enix really loves shooting themselves in the foot after stubbing their toe.

Welp guess we’re not getting octopath 3 at this rate. Real shame Octopath 2 was one of the best rpgs I’ve played in a while, visually stunning unique approach to story telling and amazing sound track.
I just hope some studio keeps doing HD 2D games. Octopath traveler 2 was by far and away one of the best games I played visually speaking recently and it would be a real shame to see that art style fade away the way pixel art did all those years ago, before coming back thanks to indies.

ah man, now we won’t get good octopath games anymore!

I think of Square Enix more as the developer of Octopath than Acquire — What exactly did Acquire contribute? Not being shady, just a genuine question.
Does this change mean anything for future games on the HD 2D engine? I think their art style is gorgeous and it would be a shame for them to fall off.
