Honestly I think this comes down to a diff in priorities. The naming is probably done by marketing/sales ppl to maximize revenue, not created by engineers to be the most logical…

Nah, no one is as bad as Nvidia when it comes to naming things, because they ACTIVELY name parts deceptively… 1060 3 vs 6 GB (where the vram wasn’t labeled on many advertisements and online offers), or their entire mobile line, which uses the same names as the desktop parts but usually provides AT LEAST a teir lower in performance (mobile 4090 ~= 4070ti, although technically it is an underclocked 4080 chip). And then they nearly went ahead with the whole 4080 12 GB vs 16 GB, where the 12 GB also had about 15% reduction in raw performance.

sure, the 4070 wasn’t as powerful as what we wanted, but it was still a generation newer than the 3070 and a step above the same generation 4060.

I take issue with Nvidia using the same names for their laptop and desktop parts. An uniformed buyer might look up how an RTX 4070 performs and satisfied with the performance will buy a laptop with an RTX 4070. Without realizing it they end up getting a completely different product with significantly worse performance. Less cores, lower clockspeed, less cache, smaller memory bus, less VRAM, less memory bandwidth, but same product name!
The removal of the m suffix from laptop GPUs (e.g. GTX 970m) was an intentional decision, and not one made for the sake of transparency. I would argue that it is intended to mislead consumers.

Hey man except ti super what is the problem for this gen ? and thats not hard anyway. Supers for refresh and ti for bit more perf in a card class. While amd had 6600 6600xt 6650xt same goes for 6700 6700 xt and 6750 xt and two gre models. And lets not waste any more time for explaining monitors they are entirely different. Though ı agree intel does better. The number near “a” goes up performance goes up its really simple.

Sony has very catchy names for their headphones (/s) that happen to be kinda confusing as well.
And then there’s the USB foundation with renaming a standard numerous times. From USB 3.0 to 3.1 Gen 1 to 3.2 Gen 1. I really can’t think of any reason why they even bothered to screw up their naming scheme, aside from someone in the USB foundation wanting to see the world burn.

I’ve even tried to think of my own scheme for naming products, and it covered all the bases and seemed logical and sane. Then I realized I had just basically recreated Intel’s processor naming scheme with different letters and understood how hard it really is.
Nvidia gpu product names are pretty good imo. It’s nothing like monitor names

You had Quadro RTX 3000 -> RTX A3000 -> RTX 3000 Ada Generation (yes, thats the official name)
I’m fairly new to pc parts and I absolutely have no idea what I’m reading when looking at Intel CPUs.
I mainly look at AMD for that exact reason
