There are different kinds of noises.
To me, computers before large coolers and noisy fans became a thing were OK. HDD clicking, fans working at constant speed, all that was fine. Audible, but not anywhere annoying or painful.
My issues with PC noise started around the Athlon XP, which was a pain to cool properly. At first I had a shitty fan that started buzzing and clicking very soon. Then I had a more expensive cooler that had a fan spinning very fast, and that literally caused me headaches. Finally I managed to get some kind of a very expensive (for poor me) cooler, which was the Glacial Tech Silent Breeze 462 II, I think. *That* finally solved my issues.
HDD noises are also different. HDDs in my first PCs (in the 500 MB – 10 GB era) were loud, but that was just clicking. It didn’t worry me. My first problem with an HDD was my first 2 TB drive. Which was reasonably quiet compared to those old ones, but for some reason it had this vibration that caused my entire case to make *extremely* annoying rattle that I couldn’t get rid of no matter how much rubber, pencil erasers and whatnot I stuffed into various places.
It took me a while to get all that stuff sorted out, get a good case, finally start using an SSD instead of an HDD, and find out what fans don’t cause me headaches. *Then* it was paradise.
So my whole experience with PC noises was not “noisy then, silent now”, but more like “noisy but OK at first, then painfully noisy, then finally silent”.
And it’s those memories from the painfully noisy era that make me very suspicious of AIOs. Yeah, I know that they’re quieter than air, but… I know they’re not silent. And I’ve no idea how well I’ll take to *that* kind of noise, pump noise and whatnot. I know I’m fine with regular fans as long as they’re not rattling, not humming (like the Arctic P14) and not spinning too fast. But I’ve no idea about AIOs, and I’m afraid that they’ll bring me back to that era of constant struggle with noise. I’m probably overthinking it, but still.

I got 15 fans spinning in mine, it’s pretty noisy. Got to keep the 4090 and the ryzen 7900 cool
