There’s so much “modern gaming bad” discourse this was like a breath of fresh air

The lows may be lower, but the highs are so very much higher.

  2. Fearless_Lychee3035

Finally someone acknowledging gaming isn’t bad right now.

  3. IndianMenace

This video is spitting facts. Tons of amazing modern games coming out today

  4. monomon02

Videogames are at their peak. People who dont like them anymore should move on

  5. lKrauzer

A couple of good games don’t make up for the whole situation, it is not just about the games themselves, but about the abusive anti-consumer tactics.

Gaming is not just about the titles as much as listening to music is not just about hitting the play/pause button.

  6. No-Beginning6554

This video was spot on, people need to play indie games more

  7. ChurchillianGrooves

I think part of it when looking back at previous decades is everyone forgets the bad or mediocre games that were released in that time.  However currently there’s a lot of bad trends that are going full force like games as a service, microtransactions, broken game launches, etc.

  8. centiret

There are a lot of great games in our time but there are also a lot of bad games, in general that’s nothing new. Diffrent nowadays however is that established behemoths like Battlefield, Battlefront, Halo and so on started to tremble.
There are also a lot more dirty strats to fork money from the customers (microtransactions, gambling, pre-order, dlc-madness and so on).
These developments, while not fatal to Gaming, leave some discouraged.

The thing is gaming on the whole is never universally great or terrible. Every generation has great games, terrible games, and unique ways in which the industry was pushed forward as well as unique ways in which it falls behind.

Live service models and broken games coming from developers known to be unreliable (EA, Activision) are just this generation’s issues. Must we remember the sheer amount of shovelware on the PS2 and Wii? Or how people got burnt out on realistic shooter games with muted color palettes on the PS3 and 360? Or the absolute joke that was quality control back on the NES and SNES?

There will always be passionate creative voices in the medium to support and raise up. And it’s our job to help support and curate those voices. Not just by buying the games and “voting with our wallets” but by talking about the games that inspire us or affect us. By developing and expanding the language through which we break down and discuss games.

  10. I think ppl who stick to a certain type are more likely to complaint.

I usually have a variety of genres and I’m willing to give stuff a chance ( and picky on obvious stuff) Past 2 years I’ve had like 1 dud a year.

  11. The_Veda

Companys got greedy mate. I fear that the last good ones like for example CDP, FromSoftware and Bethesda start to jump on the greed train and try to squeeze out as much profit in as short time as possible or to get as much money out of a franchise by a low standard game as a service model with micro transactions and all the other b.s.

The big players aint absolutely nothing about the games anymore nobody talks about the elephant in the room. EA and Ubisoft for instance have become huge corporations over the last to decades that only care about the numbers with obvious consequences for the quality of the games they publish.

Edit: speaking strictly just about the big triple A publishers.

  12. HahaYesGuys

I mean the last 2 Zelda games were good but struggling to even hit 30FPS in handheld mode on the only hardware they were developed for is an absolute joke.

  13. thatdudeoverdthee

It’s more that there’s just more shit than good. For every 8-9/10 there’s 8 starfields and suicide squad 😩😩

  14. Temporary_End9124

This is usually how I feel when people make these sorts of complaints. You really have to tunnel vision on just a few companies and games to get the idea that “modern gaming is dead”. There are plenty of creative, high quality AAA games every year, and even more from the indie and AA scene.

  15. Shattered_Disk4

I’m convinced everyone who says “modern gaming bad” plays exclusively games like CoD and Madden

  16. The8thHammer

I feel like hating on new things is just human nature at this point.

  17. gothteen145

I despise the whole live service and battle pass thing from current gaming…yet I also remember that kind of shit from about 2016/15 at least. Naturally these problems are still there, and there is a current issue with digital ownership, but in regards to games themselves, I think things are genuinely amazing for pure entertainment.

  18. Kvazimods

Just couldn’t be more wrong. Whatever factual statement someone makes, there will always be contrarians saying nonsense like this. Microtransactions, unfinished garbage that gets released for full price, pay to win, incredibly stretched periods between games for the sake of milking the previous entry for all it’s worth, generic gameplay, online required, games saved on servers, etc. These are all standard now. This type of thing didn’t use to exist and is now the norm. You’re just used to them making fools out of you. GTA 4 came out in 2008 and still has the best physics and ragdoll effects out of any modern game. Prices keep going up and everything is crazy expensive but the games have barely changed for the better in the last 10+ years. Compare MK1 to MK9 for example. What’s the difference? Oh yeah, the game that came out in 2011 is way better.

  19. Considering 2023 has been regarded as one of the best years for games, this isn’t really a stretch to see. The problem with judging success on discourse is that people are more likely to complain than to praise. That’s just a simple fact. Even games that are examples of the best the industry can put forward will have people complaining about them.

Also, gamers have different preferences. A perfect game for you is not a perfect game for me. Even with all its flaws, I can accept a game as perfect if I love the experience. RDR2 will forever be a game I’m happy to just roam in. Then there’s games I can appreciate, but I know I’ll never enjoy playing. Dead Space Remake is one such game. I recognize it is great, but it just ain’t for me.

  20. Light_Guardian07

People tend to see only the bad side of things nowadays. Like one game that’s not 8-9-10/10 comes out and everyone is like: modern gaming is dead, gaming isn’t how it used to be, I hate everything nowadays. Those people never played games like BG3, RDR2, GoW and so on. Modern gaming isn’t dead, good games are out there at a fair price waiting to be played. Live Service is just a phase the same as the licensed shovelware was back in the PS2 era. We just have to praise the good games and boycott the scummy and greedy stuff or the stuff where devs either went the Bethesda way or got forced to make a live service which ended in being their demise.

  21. Millera34

This is not really right. For many people.

Personally i dont think there are good examples here those all suck.

  22. TascamTwink

People are obsessed with negativity, it’s wild. I love channels that focus on positivity.

  23. MrAdvisor1

The highs and lows are higher and lower than ever before.

  24. Chase333_

Tears of the Kingdom is game of the year for me I don’t care

  25. Wakeuplevel3

I swear there’s more this then the latter

  26. 2023 was one of my favorite years of gaming ever, and i’ve been at it since the early 2000s

i’m strictly only single player games now, and there were a good 10 or so I got a TON of play out of and thoroughly enjoyed

  27. HarrMada

This “new = bad” trend sucks, people are too confident in their memories and are unaware how deceiving nostalgia and selective memory can be.

  28. CubeytheawesomestV2

There’s just one thing that needs to be fixed:

Indie games need to stop having fanbases more toxic than Chernobyl.

  29. Sonic10122

Any time people complain about AAA gaming I have to wonder what they’re smoking. Like yeah, there’s shit out there, but there’s always been shit out there. It just always sounds like the people complaining are just bad at parsing what kind of games they actually enjoy. I’ll have to watch this video later, seems like my vibe.

  30. orbitaldragon

Somewhat disagree. As a life long Zelda fan.. the new direction for the series sucks. Shit ain’t even Zelda anymore.

  31. Materasu1224

The game industry is better now simply because Xenoblade 3 exists.

  32. GloriousSpamm

I’ve been saying this for a while, but last year was the best year in gaming in the last 10 years. For every bad/mediocre game, there were like 3 good games. Baldur’s Gate 3 was the favorite of last year, but there were a number of games that were just as worthy of GOTY.

But as usual, negativity and outrage are what drive engagement. So even though there was SO MANY good games last year, we’re just going to ignore that and focus on the 3 bad games and say “gaming is dead!”

  33. Smart_Ass_Dave

Any time someone says games used to be better as if that was completely universally true, I want to shove a copy of Bill Lambeer’s Combat Basketball up their butt. I love retro games and my TV has at least one console from the NES onward. Lots of great retro games, but there’s also Ballz 3D.

  34. _uper_nknown

I like how the video says that films aren’t discussed like that when they in fact are. 2023 was viewed by and large as a return to form in the industry. Even then, a large amount of film fans constantly argue that previous eras were so much better than the current one. I mean Quentin Tarantino recently said that the past decade was the worse decade in Hollywood filmmaking.

Anyways, I also find it quite funny how the indie scene is the one taking chances meanwhile AAA titles play it safe. Which I think speaks volumes as to certain issues the industry is having that didn’t exist before. He clearly ignores the complaints that center on philosophy – gameplay vs story and how that debate has lead to quite a few steps forward and backwards in the industry.

Ultimately, I do think the gaming world is doing pretty well, yet I do find gaming becoming easier and less complex. The thing I’d say is gaming isn’t better now than it was in the past. It can be as great, but I wouldn’t call it better. On one hand we’ve gained so much and on the other we’ve lost so much. I feel that’s just the way of movements. We use to have tons of fps and many with stories to tell, but nowadays we have none. Things of that nature happen. It’s what it is.

  35. Huge-King-3663

2023 was the best year in gaming since the legendary 1997 – 2007 run.

  36. NamedUserOfReddit

Like 90% of all content released is absolutely forgettable…

  37. Newphonespeedrunner

Why is this a 600 views no audio balance YouTube video

  38. 1heavyarms3

The only complaint I have about modern games is that some games you can’t play without an internet connection even if you have a physical copy.

  39. lucky_leftie

I mean for every 1 good game there are 10-20 bad ones. They all cost the same, good or bad. I wouldn’t say it’s hopeless right now but it’s far from great.

  40. No-Arm-9355

Lifelong gamers have always despised dude-bros or casuals.

Did they ruin modern gaming? No, the industries’ predatory tactics of monetizing things we got in games naturally have.

There is good AAA, and there are bad indie.

I actually are there TOO MANY games that get released with not enough time in the oven.

  41. Shimmitar

Well there are some pretty bad things about modern gaming that we didnt have before. Like overpriced games, lootboxes, micros transactions, which should be called macro since there is nothing micro about them anymore. Then there’s gatcha games which is basically full blown gambling.

  42. Will-Isley

    For real.

I have a backlog of over 50 games to play. A backlog was something impossible to me as a kid, and no it’s not because I have less time. I still game like I am a kid lol. There’s just too much good shit to play. Especially if you pay attention to indies.

I can’t fathom how modern gaming is bad or dead unless you stick to one genre or only play multiplayer games. I’ve never eaten better in my life. I frankly would love a slow year with few big releases so I can work on my backlog lol.

There’s just so much diversity and creative voices!

  43. adellredwinters

2023 was seriously one of the BEST years in gaming…unless you worked in the industry.

People who say modern gaming is bad I beg you to play more fucking games that aren’t just fifa and call of duty.
