implying I even reach 60 fps. 😛 jk, I do. I overbuilt my pc ages ago for a reason. solid 60 at 1080p boyeee.

Limiting framerates is, weather you like it or not, one of the easiest way to decrease energy draw on a system while doing low demand tasks. And if you live in California, also for legal compliance for high draw components.
You multiply that across some 10 billion devices and you might start seeing the point of this. Or not but that’s kinda on you then 🙂
YellowFogLights
And yet Halo Infinite has an uncapped fully rendered main menu environment. No lie my 3080 Ti will suck 370W in the menu unless I cap it in settings.

From an energy conserving standpoint it works, but it should have an option to disable once you start a resource intensive 3D application.
I don’t need 144hz for the desktop, 60 is fine.
flappers87
Awful headline take.
These are just power recommendations. Especially if you’re running on a laptop… lowering your refresh rate to 60hz is a very good way to conserve energy and battery life. Even on PC’s, lowering refresh rates reduces load on GPU if you’re syncing frames.
Less load = less power = greener usage. I fail to see any problem here.
Oh but yes… Microsoft bad, anything they say is bad. Forgot about the bandwagon for a moment there.
ExtraTNT
Yeah, the os that uses a lot of power on its own… with my debian setup i work 8h on battery, docker and fancy realtime blur running in background) the device is advertised as up to 10h battery life (win 10) you never get that… if i kill docker and fancy effects, i get 12h… so pls, microsoft, go f yourself

Average company, “we are in this together” mentality, no we are not, 100 companies are responsible for 71% of world pollution, you are the problem, not average person.
Eziolambo
Sorry, Mr. Gates. Looks like you have to give up your private jet, so 1 million gamers can game peacefully at 144 Hz.
Dawzy
Yes, your carbon footprint would be lower and if you were on a laptop you may save a chunk of battery life.
They’re only recommending it if you want to lower your carbon footprint.
I don’t see anything wrong with this, it’s a good way to lower your power consumption (that includes your bill) if you don’t need the extra grunt at the time.

Well of course Microsoft is invested in the carbon footprint! Didn’t you see that they dodged all that really processor intensive AI nonsense and totally didn’t incorporate it into their search engine for even the most pointless and mundane searches? Even when you didn’t ask for it?
Wait, AI is in all of their searches? Even if you’re asking stupid crap that doesn’t need it- which is a lot of wasteful energy?

Well- I guess they could lower all the power draw of PCs of rando’s and claim it on their taxes.
GoldenX86
They would reduce the “carbon footprint” a LOT if they stopped uploading gigabytes worth of telemetry each day.
Half of my battery life is gone in CPU wake-ups for useless stuff.
Crafty_Life_1764
those energy recoomondations are so fukking annoying, if I want to save energy I don’t use my pc… quite fukking easy.

Yeah sure watching your desktop wallpaper or porn at 240MHz is surely a must. You can switch the profile when you want…
ChampionshipComplex
Why would you say it like that?
Microsoft have billions of users and drawing something on a screen 120 times a second, rather than 60 times a second is using much more energy.
How is that recommendation any different than having your laptop go to sleep, or your monitor go to standby.
Disastrous-Rips
Well yeah that makes sense. This is also a very good tip for people using laptops on battery
VincentThacker
Typical greenwashing and gaslighting. Microsoft themselves already caused unnecessary increased power consumption by forcing Modern Standby on every device.
Abdowo
Where exactly is the issue? You went into energy saving section and expected them to tell to unlock your frame rates??
fellipec
Fvck it, even enable the screensaver only to zero this screen
Soon they will suggest disabling all the extra cores on the CPU too?
Take some of those extra RAM sticks out also.
And buy a smaller monitor, a 14″ 1280×720 will use a lot less than those behemoths 32″ 4K too.
ddaok
okay, whats the problem?
Life-Engineering-564
I mean it’s true, but it’s not the reason why it’s necessary, climate change isn’t happening because everyone is playing above 60hz.
That carbon footprint thing shouldn’t be there because it’s inconsequential, it should just be about saving power.

Maybe Microsoft can fix their shitty software to lower system overhead instead of burning dinosaurs to steal extra user data.
