Dragon’s Dogma 2 Takes A Risk Not Implementing Traditional Quality Of Life Convenience Features Like Fast Travel And Quest Markers, Director Says Those Things Are For “Boring” Games
>This isn’t to say that Dragon’s Dogma 2 won’t feature fast travel, just that Capcom is banking on most players not feeling the need to often utilize the feature because the team is confident they’ve built a world worth exploring.
>Fast travel options in the game include Port Crystals which can be teleported to with expensive and scarce Ferrystones as well as a new option, Oxcarts.
So according to their own standards, their game is boring? What a self own
eldrscrolls
Lack of a decent fast travel system is probably the biggest problem with Dragon’s Dogma. Constantly walking back and forth between the same locations with the same enemy spawns was fucking terrible.
Respect my time.

Bro, we’re Millennials out here in our late 20’s – 30’s, busy with family and jobs. No one’s got time to explore and retrace steps back and forth for fetch quests. Give us fast travel dammit.
BroadsideJohn
As long as there is some form of quick save then I don’t really care. Don’t really have time to trek 30min to find some sort of save point.
Ideally would prefer skyrim style fast travel though…

He’s right and he should say it.
If your game is well designed and designed around it, those mechanics can enhance the experience and become part of the game.
There are no intrinsically good or bad mechanics, just poorly designed implementations.
I hope their know what they’re doing.
Demonchaser27
Yeah I mean article is right. I’m not going to say they can’t do such a thing. But it’s definitely a bit risky.
iWentRogue
Fast traveling? Boring
30fps? Fun!
SunBlindFool
I don’t play games to remind me how long it takes to walk to once location to the next in real life.
DoctorMedical
Couldn’t disagree more. I played DD when I first came out. I really tried to like it but gave up on it.
Bought it again with all the DLC years later with the added fast travel and it saved the game for me.
I’m all for games wanting to be immersive and I get fast travel can ruin that. But when you’re playing a massive open world RPG filled with quest givers, locations, and merchants fast travel is great and a near necessary.
Especially a game filled with quest givers that need to be spoken with at very specific points.
Deldris
When they announced this game I thought “Oh, good, they can finally implement those obvious, and currently standard, QoL things that make the game not feel like a chore” just for the director to shit all over me for not wanting their game to feel like a chore.
I think game devs are entitled to their vision and I think there will be people who like this game but the director’s blatant disregard for the people who want to play their game is baffling.
KennethHaight
The only risk it’s taking is running at 30fps in 2024.
konotiRedHand
Mods will fix it :0
pegleggregx
Limited fast travel at least in the endgame is preferred. Fast travel made Starfield far worse however.
If the world isnt an empty wasteland im alright with a design choice like this.
Thopterthallid
The bigger risk is asking for $95 CDN for it.
SassyTurtlebat
Fast travel is old. What we really need is some way to travel autonomously. Some people ride something maybe the mage kinda float flies along the ground who knows doesn’t matter as long as you can press a button and travel automatically
Bad_Faith_Detector
First game has a form of fast travel and I’m sure this uses the same system. It’s just limited and you need to be strategic with crystal placement. I really liked it.
Just-Wait4132
If you played the first one you know fast travel exists. It’s just very expensive and is treated as powerfully as teleportation should be, trivializing certain quests. It’s to encourage you to think about the actual logistics of going on a quest across the country and exploring the world.
kh730
The best games have fast travel that you don’t even use. Like Spiderman 1/2 and RDR2. I don’t know if this is the way to go unless their traversal and scenery is some ground breaking shit but if it’s like the first game it’s just running past the same things.
Millera34
Those things are boring he is right
golddilockk
i don’t know man. often the devs and players have different definition of boring . Also no dev would ever label a single component of their game as boring. I’m sure when some devs implement unskippable cutscenes, forced slow walk section or long and elaborate pick-up animations they also think all they are absolutely necessary because their game is ‘special’ and not like other games.
A truly immersive and alive world is amazing but in a 50+ hour rpg with a big open world, sometimes, no matter how intriguing your world is, I just want to go to point X and do Y and don’t care for jumping through hoops for that. There is a reason why convenience store exists and can charge 6 bucks for a single battery. Sometimes I just don’t want to walk.
Fingerprint_Vyke
I bet one of the Giants or Stone Titans (or whatever we saw in the trailer) will eventually befriend your party so they can toss you within walking distance of the town you need to get to .
Like BT in Titan Fall 2
Razing_Phoenix
I remember playing the first dragons dogma and getting very bored running through that same mountain pass area at the beginning of the game 20 or 30 times with the npcs saying the same lines at the same spots every time and enjoying the game much more when you unlocked fast traveling.
SafetyGuyLogic
I mean, cool, money saved.
top-knowledge
Really don’t get how you could be surprised by this if you played DD1
watkins1989
The best thing about the first game was the feeling that you were really embarking on a dangerous quest every time you left the city walls. The journey WAS the adventure. I’m super excited for the sequel to expand on that
Liberteer30
Would be cool if both of those were optional to toggle on and off.
In10tionalfoul
Y’all are wild, has ANYONE here played the first game? That game also doesn’t have “Fast travel” but it does have port crystals and ferry crystal to teleport you wherever the fuck there’s a port crystal around the whole map. They already showed that it’s the same in DD2. SMH
gothteen145
I disagree with these things being boring, I think it depends how they’re done. But if this game does end up trying new things and succeeding with them, then i’ll be happy with that and it’ll mean another great fantasy game.

I’m about it. Going to be nice to have a refreshing change of pace, the key is going to be implementation though
SuperNoahsArkPlayer
Just play Morrowind then
fun_you_fools
Favorite part of the first one was Bitterblack Isle…because you didn’t spend 20 mins walking from one end of the map to the other. Not sure why they’re going back on the infinite use ferry stone all of a sudden.
