I think we’re entering an era where games are going to start flattening out.
What I mean is we’ve plateaued graphics and I think the goal going forward will be to make games as playable as possible rather than as high graphics looking as possible.
Game developers don’t benefit from making games which can’t run at low or medium settings on older hardware. It hurts their bottom line when players can’t participate. Who gives a shit if your game looks gorgeous if only a fraction of the community will buy it? The reality is they would prefer more buyers and players at mid-level graphics.
The graphics obsession is specific to a niche market of perfectionists who I don’t believe represent where the money is at.

6 years! Boy how the times changed, a computer that wasn’t fully obsolete after 3 to 5 years was pure fantasy not too long ago, my first build from 2002 was lucky to be able to play anything released after 3 years! I remember downloading the demo for Splinter Cell 2 and it ran ok, but the full game practically laughed at my GPU specs and refused to run at all and at the 6 year point, basic web browsing was becoming a heavy task!
The fact that your PC just started showing its age in the minimum requirements after 6 years is amazing in my book.

My GTX 970 is working its ass off to run Palworld rn. I think itโll be the 10 year anniversary of that card coming out this year ๐

Yeah she’s my baby and she’s going to die sooner or later, managed to save up ยฃ1,600 for now so I’ll have to shop around and I guess learn how everything works etc.

I don’t get it…. I’m on 3060 and 1500x – Run ultra MWIII at 100+ frames. Sure it’s slightly OC’ed but isn’t that the point of building your own pc? You can keep over clocking until it fails by then you upgrade… this is how I’ve did it since 07…..

I used to feel that way with my 10 year old PC.
Can’t play many of them new games.
Best I can play is Destiny 2 or somewhat modded Skyrim.
Then recently I don’t feel that way anymore due to indie games using low/mid poly or just cartoonish 3d graphics.
To top it off.. I can play Palworld. A little stutter on some areas when chunk loading but very much playable.

My setup is 10 year old cpu and 8 year old gpu and im only now Upgrading it ๐

I rocked a Phenom II system for 12 years, going from a GTX 760 to a GTX 1060 GPU over the years. It wasn’t until 2020 that there were games I wanted to play which wouldn’t run at all on that ancient CPU. It took that long for substantial additions to the x86 instruction set to become widely used.
Now that I’ve upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600X and RTX 3060TI, I expect that it could last at least as long.

Yeah I realised I built this rig 12 years ago.
Have ship of Theseus’d it up over the years. I enjoy only spending a few hundred every couple of years to keep it going.

Guess what, the games really were better back then. FInishing Half-life, as it was free on steam. And man, game has like no cutscenes, yet I was enjoying every bit of their low poly…all because there is soul meaning behind every voxes. There is a story in there and its nit shoved in your face. Same for like older halo games, jedi games, diablo 2. Like, I am using half my screen for game, half for videos and it runs smooth. N
WHere as looking at new games: always online, always fomo market p2w monetisation of some kind, new launchers, unskipable cutscenes and quicktime events but none of what is shown means anything. Its like a set of muggufins, go here kill that, find this item in a chest…. Idk, but somewhere along th eline majority of new games became shit.

I built my machine in 2013. I can play Cyberpunk. Minimum requirements are written by developers who are too lazy to optimize their shit. As long as you have better specs than an Xbox, the game will run. The only way to know is to try.
