CDPR overhyped the game – But the biggest problem was/is influencers making things up

One of the worst thing I can remember from back in 2018 was an interview with a german news outlet (Gamestar if I remember correctly) were it was clarified that with “Living their lives within a full day and night cycle” did not mean every NPC had a full routine. It was said “That was simply not possible with our current tech and manpower. We mean that the world has a seamless day and night 24h cycle like Witcher 3.”.

The interview later got translated by a community member and fan, but they crucially mis-translated that quote to say every NPC “has a full day and night cycle” – and every outlet ran with it – maybe even Gamestar.

Edit: That day and night cycle was even experimented later after that fiasco in hopes of remedying the fallout but it was later scrapped due to already mentioned problems. Remnants of it can be seen in the little village in the Biotechnica fields and near Rivers trailer.

So yes, CDPR is at fault for their illustrious marketing. But even worse are outlets overhyping every word from the developer for clicks and clout. But that’s the internet I guess. 🙁

I dint think influencers are making things up. It would backfire on them if they did. If anything they just echo back infornation that might be false later or rumors. The biggest problem has always been false marketing from developers. Because they are the trusted source.

Still waiting for all the stuff that would DEFINITELY be in 1.3, 1.5, 2.0 that YouTubers stated would definitely be there. Just post some gameplay or something if you have nothing to say.

  4. DREAM066

Always thought it was funny when cdpr said things like “hey guys we are experimenting with this feature” and everyone took that and ran with it, then shocker the thing that was unconfirmed didn’t make it in :0

  5. Petrovish

“The biggest problem” bro the game LITERALLY was not playable on release. True, youtubers and misinterpretation hurt, but not as much as the game being broken

  6. At least every youtuber will be a good follower of the “put a face or a person on the thumbnail to get more clicks” mantra

  7. Yorick257

The biggest game news scams start with “it’s rumored”. Yes, I can understand you had in the dream last night. Yes, by saying “it’s rumored” you make it technically the truth. No, it doesn’t make it any better.

“But the biggest problem was/is influencers”. Say no more. You nailed it. Just ignore them and enjoy. It’s a fake job (I know it requires work..don’t come at me) relying on what is essentially propaganda and hype.

  9. Commonlyfound10

If the game is forced third person, im not buying it. Ruins scale and immersion.

  10. Kurupt_Introvert

They really missed on car customization ESPECIALLY now that we can have weapons.

I think this is part of where I burned out on Destiny. Too much daily content for lore, speculation, and hype, it didn’t feel like I could drop it for a bit to play something else. Fortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t a live service game and the FOMO element is absent.

  12. LordFlash103

Who seriously cares what influencers have to say ffs. Let alone this being the games problem lol.

Biggest problem this game has now is the lvl 60 cap. And the non removeable mods. In all other aspects its kinda perfect.

Influencers will never reach the vast majority of the general public. Look at the view counts on those videos and on those articles and it’s nothing compared to the billboards and TV ads that dominated the news cycles and marketed themselves towards the casual audience who primarily buy and play video games. Yes the more invested fans and journalists are guilty of overhyping but CDPR clearly set the bar and failed to meet it. Similar shit came out around fallout 76 where people were trying to blame customers for misinterpreting ambitious marketing. But ambitiously hype marketing is an intentionally deceitful practice on the part of the developers/publishers to trick people into overhyping games for them.

CDPR rightfully deserves praise for fixing the game and making phantom liberty. However, that’s still the bare minimum expectation when you release a broken disaster that’s missing half the features and mechanics it promised. it still took almost 3 years to get the game to a state it should have been in at launch.

Really, I think it comes down to CDPR not realizing just how much work it would take to build night city alone and also make their first ever FPS and promising witcher 3 levels of polish on the quest design and branching paths just wasn’t possible.

“But the biggest problem is influencers”. Could just stop there, it applies to just about everything.

  15. Valaxarian

Tbh, I wouldn’t mind a small update that’d add some new implants or guns

  16. rac-attack

I honestly just want Cyberpunk 2077 mods on console, If the Witcher 3 can get them Cyberpunk should be able to

The biggest problems in gaming, aside from CEOs and shareholders driving market trends towards creating a continuous extractive model and destroying the one-time transactional one, will always be Marketing. Because marketing is *always* trying to sell you a dream. Devs might over promise or have to make concessions, and their game might be lesser than they wanted because of tech limits, time, money (usually that last one), but because games and games media is now a constant 24/7, it’s a constant shitshow of marketing and spin.

And now that ALL YouTubers, even just the ones who do it for fun, are forced into a race to the bottom of The Algorithm to get the clicks and likes and engagement in order to compete with the worst actors, everyone is incentivized to misrepresent, omit context, or straight up lie, or you’ll just lose out.

I have a corollary to the saying “the best trick the Devil ever played was convincing the world he did not exist” and its “the best marketing campaign ever concocted was turning our hobbies into jobs.”

  18. This sub’s effort to protect CDPR needs to be studied.
They released an unfinished game and hyped it up with false advertising, why is this so hard to accept

  19. RobbieRotten55

As an FPS fan I really don’t get why everyone is so obsessed with it being 3rd person, I love the first-person combat way more. Much more immersive too

  20. DifferencePretend

Click bait shit tubers I call them.

  21. Wildthorn23

So much stuff was mis translations that they took as fact and their fanbases just didn’t do their own looking to verify the claims.

  22. Sufficient_Focus_816

Youtube is still a thing? Who wastes time or trust into those make-up ‘analysis’?

  23. Juggernaut7654

Those needles are sick, also is that Adam Jensen in the second pic?

  24. InvokerSS

Who remembers when youtubers were thinking that we are gonna get “like-a-pokemon” game in cyberspace?

    Oh boy

I can’t find any of those right now but there were plenty of them, so if anyone finds it, please send 🙂

  25. lordluke24

I am surprised no one is getting the joke. This person is mocking The Day Before and their shenanigans.

  26. Evilhammy

no, the biggest problem was that the game released as a piece of broken garbage that took 3 years to fix

  27. SenpaiSwanky

No, the biggest problem is what the company responsible for this game released as their final product before 2.0 and Phantom Liberty came out.

Content creators can lie all they want, who cares? CDPR did plenty of lying themselves, telling us about mechanics that never made it to release. They also went on Twitter and had a whole string of tweets basically rubbing their superiority in other devs’ faces.

The tweets boiled down to “we are CDPR, the guys who made TW3. We don’t make our employees work under crunch, our DLC are free, and we are the best”. Literally all lies.

Edit – seriously, we get that this game has a massive comeback. None of you are going to be rewriting history though. Launch was shit and CDPR dropped all the fucking balls. Period. Full stop.

  28. nothin2flashy

Much like all of “online” 90% of it is filled with misinformation and scam clickbait bullshit for views or money.

  29. RammyJammy07

The main reason people were disappointed with the features is because content creators started throwing out their personal ideas as fact and what they wanted to see rather than what had been confirmed

  30. fanservice999

Imagine that, a influencer making stuff up to get views. Who would have guessed that would happen! That’s why I don’t even bother watching most of them. It’s utter BS the majority of the time.

  31. andrusbaun

We should demonetize social media and leave it to hobbyists. Less sensation and low-sodium atmosphere would be a good thing to us all.
