The story here is that, way back in the dark ages when colleges still published printed course catalogs every year, my college thought they’d do a parody of a stereotypical catalog cover, which always seemed to show students hanging out and studying outdoors in a bucolic-looking setting and pleasant, summery weather. Also in the upcoming semester they were for the first time requiring all incoming freshmen to own a computer, something which couldn’t be assumed back in those days. There was actually a specific computer they wanted everyone to buy through them — from DEC, and they weren’t cheap.

I had a work-study job in the dean’s office at the time and just happened to be there when they were looking for a student to model, so they grabbed me and got me outside to shoot this cute scene. It’s the only copy of the catalog I still have, as a memento of my immortal moment.

The computer was a DEC Pro 325 or 350, which was essentially a single-board (and badly underperforming) PDP-11. They were meant to compete with the then brand-new IBM PC, but didn’t catch on.
