I think mostly Rivers writing and story are a bit weird so it’s not anything to do with his appearance. At the same time Robbie is definitely hot so…probably?
I mean the looks didn’t “help” the character for me, but even if he looked better I don’t think that’d have gotten me over the way he’s written.
To me he just starts out as this barely friendly side character in an almost one-off quest and then he immediately jumps to “but we’re soooo close” waaay to quickly for me, makes him come off weird. The lack of dialogue options to tell him off didn’t make his quest appeal to me either (i.e. you can well be in a relationship by the time you do it but can’t tell him that / back him off).
He’s super well written but to me just super uncomfortable in a real way.
It wasn’t the man or the model. It was hanging out with his boring fucking family while I’m trying to take care of business.

i think it’s how he is introduced. just as a weirdo jackass cop that is helping but also hindering our investigation.
the fact that it’s Robbie Daymond is the only reason I followed through with the whole quest.
The problem with River’s quest is that it feels like the game is trying to force romance on you, even as male V who can’t romance him there is this romantic tension. It’s impossible to just see him as a friend.
As female V it is just obnoxious how hard they try to force it. You almost feel guilty turning him down.

Nah. River’s big problem is that he has very little content, and neither of the missions he’s directly involved with are conducive to the extremely awkward and uncomfortable move he makes on a female V afterwards.
Judy, Panam, and Kerry: even when they’re trying to deal with serious shit (or Kerry’s definition of serious, anyway) there are moments in each of their lines where you take a step back and just… chill, relax, talk like normal people. This lets you feel as if you’ve at least developed some sort of meaningful bond with the characters. It leads to an organic friendship and possible relationship.
River’s line is ass-backward in that the actual chance to relax comes right at the very end of his chain when he and his family have all decided to try and pair you up. But hang on, Judy, Panam, and Kerry have all taken the time to get to know you. River hasn’t… the *only* thing he knows about you is that you are a merc.
And Panam and Judy both do something for you before they try and make their move. Panam helps you with Hellman, gives you Overwatch, will toast Jackie’s memory even though she never met him because she knows he was important to you. Judy isn’t in a position to make such gestures, but she’ll still offer you a place to sleep when you’re unwell, make you breakfast, and Pyramid Song is her wanting to share something with someone who means a lot to her.
What does River do? Nothing, except make some really awkward comments. He doesn’t make an effort to get to know you. The entire friendship/relationship with River has been immensely one-sided, and fair enough, he has his own shit going on with Randy, but Panam, Judy and Kerry have their own shit going on too but they still want to know V as a person.
Yes and no. Yes because his VA is hot as fuck. No because his plot is still way too weak to be so late in the game; I fought the Law should be just after the heist and tie in with other larger quests, like Judy and Panams plot does.
River came off as more a desperate loneliness than he actually liked you. It completely felt like, oh a girl who helped my family and gave me attention, she much totally be into me! The only reason I did his question was to get his hand gun. His whole quest line was just annoying as hell.
His ingame design doesn’t exactly scream “NCPD”. That was one gripe I had with his design

Nah the problem was the dialogues. It was so obvious that it was written for a female V which made it sound awkward when playing as a male.
No built up for romance. No chemistry. Ultra cringy dinner. Hard pass.

I did my second playthrough not too long ago. Going into it, I falsely recalled his quest line being multiple quests tracking down that serial killer. Like I had it in my head we spend a good amount of time together on this investigation.
His quest line is like two quests, killer located, dinner with his sister, and then I never speak to him again. Nowhere near the level of time and detail as Panam, Judy, and even Kerry who isn’t a thing until Act 3.
He just needed like 2 more missions before that family scene. He must’ve been the last to be developed as a love interest or something. Plus his personality wasn’t as big as all the other romances so you’d really need more narrative to get to know him. Unlike say Kerry who’s personality is so big you don’t have to spend as much time to know who he is. He would’ve been perfect if they had done a noir themed expansion.
River’s problem is that the thing I remember from the potential romance component of his plotline the most is when his relatives dropped the ‘who thinks V and River would make a good couple?!’ bomb on me, which made me have a relic malfunction in real life right there in my office chair.
The main issue with rivers romance is that it is insanely abrupt. Not to mention that river looks gay as hell and he isn’t gay lmaoo.
River’s look is so “we couldn’t afford Vin Diesel.”

It’s not the character model that’s the problem. It’s the quest progression. Out of all the romance options. He’s the most random. They barely know each other and next thing you know, he’s calling V for help, then just a few days later, get a family dinner. Like, HOW?!
The thing I don’t like about River (and a few other characters) is they try to hook up with V despite choosing dialogue that you deliberately pick to avoid that scenario. It’s strange
i think his personality is a much bigger issue than his looks tbh… i find his design pretty cool, but that can’t save him from being a willfully ignorant bootlicker with no sense of when it’s appropriate to hit on someone super aggressively 🤷🏼
Its more he feels kinda 2D especially compared to the other romance options, plus the romance feels kinda forced and creepy for Fem V.
