Takemura also talks about eating salmon or cod or whatever kinda fancy fish on the scouting mission where you hack into the float. So i imagine there are fish farms or areas where animals still exist but sparringly.

You see, in the dark future, there’s several ways one can acquire an animal or two. The first is the most obvious: find a living specimen and capture them. This is much more difficult to achieve, though, as it’s far harder to find intact ecosystems as of 2020, 2045, and especially 2077. That isn’t to say these species are entirely gone — quite the opposite, in fact — it’s just that it is *far, far* more expensive to get one than it used to be. (For example, in 2020, it would cost 300 eddies to get a single naturally born and raised small dog, or 5000 for one taken from the wild)
The second, and more common, method is to **clone them.**
In 2020, Biotechnica was the pioneer of animal cloning, and was able to produce nearly any animal you can think of — *if* you had the money for it. This included, but was not exactly limited to:
* Small, Medium and Large Dogs
* Housecats
* Large Cats
* Leopards
* Cheetahs
* Sharks
* Bears and Large Bears
* Chimps
* Gorillas
* Baboons
* Dolphins
* Seals
* Otters
* Small and Large Raptors (Not Velociraptors, this is in reference to birds like Hawks or Eagles)
* Bats
* Squirrels
* Mice/Rodents
* Rabbits
* Tigers/Lions
All for various costs. However, these animals would only be sold as a cloned adult that lacks any kind of mental or physical capabilities aside from the ones coded in their genes. In most cases, this wasn’t an issue, as most animals could be chipped-in with proper routines, essentially making them act like robots. Though, if you wanted a pet with an actual personality and training, it’d cost you double the price.
These animals could even be enhanced with their own line of cybernetic implants, or sold with said implants already installed. This included cybereyes, reflex boosters, weapon links, behavior chips, cyberlimbs, hidden compartments, increased strength, popup guns, cyberclaws or fangs, and more! Isn’t that wonderful?
In fact, there’s even a special variant of these pets referred to as the “Cyberpred,” a *highly* modified animal specially tailored for security or attack. Imagine a Tiger or a Leopard outfitted with infrared optics, cybernetic legs, titanium claws, enhanced sense of smell and hearing, and a heavily reduced sensation of pain. I’d share the horrifying art of one such Cyberpred, but I can’t really embed images into comments.

Real live animals are largely extinct, biotechnica are supposedly reverse engineering and resurrecting species though. Tbh pets like reptiles and tropical fish are more likely to have survived the 2020s in collections of corps and the wealthy.

There’s a news report about how pet taxes went up, so I don’t think animals are extinct so much as difficult to find and expensive to obtain. You just won’t find them wandering free around the city (other than the bakeneko).

I don’t think they did but a lot disappeared or were removed from the city because of diseases. I think in a conversation with Takemura V said something along the lines of “I thought all the animals were gone in the city. First it was the birds, then dogs, but cats held on the longest.” Also, the news talks about dog ownership licenses going up in price, and a quest with an iguana.
