I used integrated graphics during AMD Athlon 3DNow days (late 1990’s). It’s been viable recently too. I think it’s more about what level of performance and settings you’re willing to use.

If you want to play modern AAA games not really. Like maybe 1080p low with upscaling but even then I’m not completely sure how it would go.
If you want to play games that are a little bit older and don’t care much about high settings then yeah looks like it.

The problem with older IGPs was that they had almost no RAM bandwidth, and GPUs are bandwidth machines. Sandy Bridge and Llano moved the IGP on-die, giving it far more RAM bandwidth than it had hanging off DMI or HyperTransport.
They still weren’t *good* but at that point you could handle games at a moderate resolution for the day on low settings. I recall playing Skyrim on a Core i5-3570K at 1600×900 at a good and steady 30-45 FPS. For someone used to “Intel Extremely Slow Graphics” and AMD’s 990G which wasn’t much better, that was incredible.
Today it’s got even better – still nowhere near a good dGPU – and you can play AAA games at 720-900, scaled if you like, on low with completely good framerates. There’s an AMD 7540U in my work laptop and it delivers results similar to an old GTX 680 I have in the son’s gaming machine.
So “viable”, yes, “impressive”, no.

With the advent of the Steam Deck and the like, iGPUs should improve a lot in the next CPUs. If not as a baseline, as optional features of those CPUs (currently using the “g” moniker in existing Ryzen CPUs).
This pseudo standardization of hardware also means that developers building games for the Steam Deck also tap into a potentially sizable market of desktops that can also run their games where other integrated GPUs typically perform poorly. I know Intel is considering a huge improvement to their iGPUs now that Arc exists and I really hope they pull it off.

Things have improved sp much since then with the new iGPUs in the new handhelds and laptop APU’s.
Always impressed with my SteamDeck and what it can do and also enjoying the Z1 extreme on my Legion Go. Was playing Alan Wake 2 in bed this evening on it. Sub 40-55 for but plenty good enough for that pace of game and some portable gameplay.

Both my kids rock Ryzen 5 5600g APUs and yeah, 1080p without cranking the settings is absolutely playable for a lot of things. Gave them something to play on without having to fork out for a GPU and the rest of the pc all at once for their first builds

Honestly, I would not mind buying APUs if they were decently beefy, which the 8600G seems like it is. I already find them useful for DIY NAS and HTPC purposes, but if those machines can double as a living room gaming PC that can play decently demanding games @ 1080p, that’d be sick.

Well, beating a 1630 is not a big feat. Plus, don’t forget about shitty integrated card drivers and other factors that may cause stutters and inconsistent framegraphs in general. Tho it is good that iGPUs become less awful.

I got one of those 7940HS mini pcs and that 780m is no joke. I play Battlefield 2042 on 1080p low and get a solid 60fps.

It’s great to have these options now in case as a backup when you have to replace or save for a dedicated gpu! I’m impressed how integrated graphics have advanced.

There are rumors about mobile APIs who can get really close to the GTX 1060 (the Steam Deck already +- has this processing power, a shame the Deck is so gigantic because of refrigeration). That means the next Nintendo portable can provide PS4 graphics, who knows? Maybe tech that resembles the early PS4 days… asking premium prices anyway

Maybe I’m crazy and it’s all just a half-remembered fever dream… but wasn’t the point of AMD integrated graphics + an AMD GPU that they were supposed to work in conjunction with each other? Sorta like a pseudo-SLI situation, where the integrated CPU graphics and the discrete GPU complimented each other for a bit more oomph?

It depends on your expectation on viable. For me, the 5600g was viable as you could use it with a 27” 1440p monitor at 720p and play lots of newer games at medium ish settings. I know that’s not good enough for many, and that’s understandable.
I’m excited that these are seemingly going to raise the bar by a ton and be a real choice for casual gamers, especially in places with a lacking used market.
