The general trend has been that by waiting you’ll be able to buy a better GPU for a given amount of money. If that holds true, you’re best served waiting until your current setup no longer does everything you want from it – e.g. it breaks, or you want to play a new game that needs more power.

I got lucky. Bought a 1080 when the 20 series came out for ~$350, sold for $400 and waited overnight at a best buy to get a 3070 at msrp

what you’re supposed to learn is to time your purchases to maximize their use, whether that is during new launches or the first discount/sale is up to you.
You should replace your system/GPU when it’s no longer performing as you expect it to, whether that takes one generation or four generations depends entirely on what you use it for.

I’m happy with my 970. I’m not waiting for a better gpu, I love mine. I’m still waiting to have the time and energy to play Bioshock, Mass effect, the xcom 2 expansion, Firewatch, Dead Space, Amnesia, Bastion, the second half of broken age, dark souls, disco elysium, dreamfall chapters, fallout new vegas, mark of the ninja, the witness…
If I end up buying a new gpu, it’d be because my current system broke, probably. There are an awful lot of games that I can play that I’ll love or enjoy.

Due to inflation the 649$ in 2015 are 840$ in 2023. The 999$ for the Titan X would now be 1300$ so we aren’t that far off

I picked up a 1080 a few months ago for $75. Used GPUs can be great deals.
Im just keeping it on hand as a backup, or I may throw it in my next Plex Server. But for that price, I couldnt pass it up.

It is all about buying strategically. Know your ticks vs your tocks. I guarantee the person who bought a 1080 got a lot better deal than the person who bought a 2080 Super. The 30-series was a lot better generation to upgrade in than the 40-series. You can also buy uses from a good generation if the current generation is a bad deal.
Or just go run and buy a 4070 right now before the supers hit in a month.

it was only recently that upgrading from the top end became worth it with DLSS and the other software upgrades. 1080 Ti with 12 GB of memory still a great great card

The question is how far off are we from the 5000 series… I genuinely felt bad for anyone that bought the 2080TI, and then just months later, the 3080 slaughtered it for half the price.

Usually if I get a new gpu, I go one or two gens back in the mid range. Only exception was my Arc, which is specifically bought for the AV1 encoder and as a gamble for Intel to drive competition. Plus its always an upgrade that way too one way or another. Although I think I’ve been hovering in the more or less GTX 1080/1080Ti performance range for the past near decade lmao. Especially in VRAM amount.
Dual 760 SLI (Exception since that’s closer to a 970/980 at half VRAM) > 390X > Vega 56 with Samsung memory and 64 BIOS> 2070 > Arc A750. While performance has improved over the course of these GPUs, I feel like all I’ve been upgrading was feature set rather than relative performance.
I want to hold on to the A750 (or Battlemage at a higher tier especially if it has 16GB) for as long as possible as a 1440p gamer who normally just aims for 60 or 80fps. I’m not a big AAA guy, so even the A750 should more than suffice.
