I don’t know how I feel about them changing engines. I’d like to think it would be better since unreal engine is very widely used, but part of me is afraid it could cause more problems than the red engine did.

UE is supported by Epic Games and income from Fortnite. If CDPR spent more than 5% of their budget on R&D during Red Engine, they’ll be saving money with UE.

Innovations like Nanite geometry, integration for every platform available, and an army of engineers give UE an edge over any engine. In UE, they can make the game once, and the engine will compile for PC and Consoles.

It’s essentially reducing the tech dept while the developers focus on the project progressively. Engineers at CDPR can now customize the engine, use its new features, and support the backend.

It’s literally my favorite 3D engine, so accessible. We maybe surprised at how polished Witcher 4 UE5 is, not to mention subsequent projects.

Look, they did an amazing job with red engine. I love cyberpunk so much, but man with the switch to unreal engine 5, Cyberpunk 2 IS going to blow our minds. With lessons learned from the first game and UE5 as amazing as it already is. I cannot wait, I’m not even a little bit worried. I’m sure it will deliver

  4. EightSeven69

better than going the bethesda way and using the same dogshit engine for over a decade

  5. Preeminator

A lot of people are skeptical about CDPR’s change to Unreal 5 but they forget one very important factor, RED engine 4 is very similar to Unreal Engine 4. It utilizes the same techniques covered with the latest version of UE 4 with the only exception being path tracing which was added as part of an NVIDIA collaboration. RED 4 is also more efficient and has been designed with modding in mind but the underlying tech is almost identical. As gamers, we won’t lose out on any of CDPR’s amazing world design or storytelling with the transition to UE5. There are countless videos on YouTube showcasing the various features UE5 has to offer and CDPR only stands to gain from this transition.

  6. I am still not sure if unreal engine will be so much better.

My biggest fear is that the game will feel very different to the current one. :/

  7. the9engines

After the change the game will look like a million other generic UE5 titles… Zero character, default lightning, the same artifacts, this is the saddest thing.

  8. C-LOgreen

Apparently, red engine is super hard to work with. and apparently unreal engine is easier to work with. But I’m not a game designer so I wouldn’t know I’m just saying what I heard.

  9. boyawsome876

I know there are a bunch of advantages that come with changing to UE but I will be sad to see Red engine go. I think a lot of the charm that comes from this game comes from them using their own engine, so I just hope we can still get this quality using EU5.

  10. FriedCammalleri23

UE5 is visually stunning, so I have no doubt Orion will look incredible.

But as others said, Unreal Engine games often have a “feel” to them that can make it seem homogenous with other UE games.

I’m very curious how the change to ue5 and relationship with epic games studios will change GOG and their approach with DRM free

  12. NOIRQUANTUM

I think, and I’m praying, that they changed it for the best. Unreal Engine 5 can handle god tier graphics(I was blown away when I saw that [UE5 Matrix Awakens demo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU0gvPcc3jQ)), is less prone to bugs and has better FPS. UE5 is also easier to work with so development will be more robust.

Let’s hope CDPR’s execs don’t screw up again like they did with 2077’s launch.

  13. Reaper-Leviathan

I feel like the years of tweaking red to make it as stable as it is now is just being thrown away but I guess it doesn’t matter. I’m sure the next game will be just as good as 2.0 2077 and cdpr learned their lesson on undercooking games

  14. ApplicationCalm649

UE5 is a marvel. The future is in good hands. Imagine Night City with no pop-in and better looking foliage.

  15. littleboymark

What’s your understanding? Looks like a cost saving measure to me.

  16. SouthWrongdoer

Plus, they are opening a new studio to work on the sequel, so they will be hiring people who are well versed in Unreal. I imagine it will actually be a lot smoother process this time around.

  17. SlamsMcdunkin

I just want to be able to zoom in without the equivalent of paper cars moving back and forth.

  18. Personal_Ad_7897

It will likely be much more optimised on UE5 but it’s definitely really impressive with what they’ve managed with the RED engine

  19. Beautiful-Grape-8222

Hopefully that’ll mean car customization in the next game

  20. blacpythoz

I hope they could at least open source the red engine and make it available to the contributors.

  21. TrueNova332

I hope CDPR releases the REDengine for public use so indie devs can make games in it that would be cool and interesting to see the types of games people come up with

  22. Roughbeggar

Personally, I’m really skeptical about the switch to UE5. When I think about the list of UE5 titles that have come out so far, I can’t name a single one that isn’t plagued with massive performance issues and require heavy upscaling or the best of the best GPUs to handle the graphics demands.

Not to mention UE5 games on consoles.

Idk hopefully developers will have a better handle on optimizing UE5 by the time the sequel comes out, but so far the track record isn’t to encouraging haha.

  23. Good, so we can rid of that terrible pop in and terrible LOD. UE5 fixes that. Nanite is beautiful.

  24. denniscohle

I think it’s gonna be fine.

I am no expert in this field but i think many of the problems we have nowadays with UE5 games is because many of the devs of these games don’t spent enough time optimizing the games and using UE5 to it’s full potential.

I am pretty confident a large and respected developer like CDPR has the resources to use UE5 to its full potential and optimize the game pretty good.

  25. Superltwt

If it brings us multiplayer then I’m all for it

  26. royaLL2010

I hate unreal. Like every game that uses this engine is horribly optimized and all share the same sluggish, muddy movement. Delay in inputs too.

  27. orouboro

UE5 hasn’t impressed me a single time so i’m iffy on it. it is what it is though, we’ll see

  28. craylash

They’re showing more initiative than Bethesda, we should be happy

  29. FujiFL4T

Man, my drunk ass thought you were talking about the cars engine in the game. I was like “what’s wrong with the avenger?”
I’m curious to see how ue5 will perform with a game the size of the first one. I like the current engine, I just don’t like the controller input feeling for the camera when aiming

  30. tom_oakley

I would’ve thought porting all their Night City assets and potentially even middleware stuff (JALI for instance) to Unreal would kinda cancel out the “streamlining” benefits that Unreal itself supposes to provide.
