Helping my student install his new CPU. I thought he was getting a big upgrade, but it was just a 5600 to a 5800. I didn’t know why he even wanted to upgrade until we took off the heat sync. He told me it was shutting off mid game. He said he paid Skytech $2k for this! Way too much paste too.

Some companies are putting big “clamshell” type covers on the interface portion of the coolers now. As in, no way in hell someone misses the fact that it needs to come off prior to install.

You don’t need to worry about the amount of paste anymore, that was only really a problem with the early CPUs and the first IHS generations, where clamping pressure wasn’t high enough.
You do need to worry about low paid unskilled workers who don’t know what they’re doing building your PCs for you.
I get at least one in a month (and I’m semi-retired from doing PCs for other people!) which has a major or severe build error. The last one was an iBuyPower with *no* thermal interface material at all.
So are the people putting together these PCs stoned or something? You’d think if it were their job to put together PCs they’d be in autopilot and *always* do it properly over and over again. I don’t understand how this keeps happening.

you know i get forgetting to remove the sticker but how do you put thermal paste on it while it literally says peel off on it…?
I was guilty of something like this back in the Athlon 64 single core days
2k$ build and they dont even try the pc before sending it to you these company just dosnt care about these clients

The overkill thermal paste might be the only reason it ran games for any amount of time lol.
did the student not tell you about the problem with the CPU? i feel like it would’ve been obvious that if it shuts off under load that it is a thermal issue

I mean paste amoubt is fine more paste is better than not enough granted ya they didnt peel the cover off.
The amount of people who leave that peel on is concerning. Let alone a freaking “professional”
That’s not just too much paste. I can literally see the transparent protective cover there. Remove that, peel it away. Omg 🤦 that will need some good cleaning too, because in the middle it’s going to be melted plastic on the copper heat pipes.
