I broke this plastic square bracket on a gtx 1060 6gb card while trying to clean l change out thermal paste as I am selling the pc to my uncle for my little cousin.
I tried apoxying it back together, melting, and just placing it in pieces to no avail.
Is this part necessary? I don’t want to sell him a faulty pc. If it’s not necessary can I just put it back together without it with no problems? Im using normal thermal paste not the metal one. Im guessing it might be to avoid spills???

That GPU would not have come with Liquid Metal from the factory, that bracket is likely a spacer to prevent the heatsink from cracking the GPU die when tensioned.
They use foam gaskets around the die to prevent Liquid Metal spills, not plastic around the PCB
It’s probably fine like it is with what’s left of the bracket, but you do need to be careful when tensioning the heatsink.
That is waaay too much thermal paste.
That’s a contact frame. With it broken, it won’t support the cooler from twisting and possibly cracking the GPU die.
This means you have to be careful when re-mounting the cooler. Do two turns of one side, then two turns of *the opposite* side (you’re keeping the tension balanced), then two turns of any other side, then two turns of its opposite side.
Keep going around like this, opposite to opposite, two turns at a time, until it is correctly tensioned.
Some people used to stick little foam pads in the four corners of the GPU substrate, but I never felt they did anything.
As this is a spacer to keep the cooler in alignment, you can see the right side and top side of what’s left of the spacer is twisted and looks like it’s higher than the GPU die, you have to either put back the GPU and check the hotspot temperature to make sure the top right corner relative to the picture of the die is not being pushed away from the heatsink.
If the temps are higher then you have to neatly trim some of that spacer to get it to be level with the die.
Jesus Christ. Just put it back together before you break it worse. That plastic shouldn’t matter, but all those tiny components that are easy to scratch off do.

Man idk.. its risky, you can Put the thing Just Back together but you need to be REALLY carefull with the heatsink now

seems like an awful lot of extra work for no gains, a 1060 is like such an old entry level card that I wonder what the effort was for this

Get a torque screwdriver you will be glad you did
It’s a shim. A guard to prevent tightening on one side too much and cracking the die. I had one on my AMD CPU back in the day since the die was exposed and didn’t have a thermal heat spreader. You’re fine as long as you don’t over tighten one side too much and evenly distribute the pressure.
Why do people keep feeling like they need to replace thermal paste that that its somehow the magical answer to everything. It’s pretty rare that thermal paste is the actual cause of a problem.
