Could V have been the legend and strongest he/she is at the end if they didn’t have the relic? Was it desperation that got V where they are or could their skill alone bring them to the top?

V would be a corpse in the landfill without the relic.

V would be rotting meat without the reboot from the relic.
As to what happens after, I think that’s rather subjective.
PsychologicalIsekai
what i heard was apparently the relic made it possible for V to get chromed out as much as possible, without it would have hit cybercosis
Dveralazo
V and Jackie escaped Konpeki, either by stealth(high assassin skills)or by just brutally murdering a lot of ‘saka elites and a mecha(great combat skills) with street quality cyberware and weapons.
They were prime material for solos.
V wouldn’t have reached the chrome level they can in game though.
Emotional_Relative15
debatable. It really is about how much chrome V has. He canonically is only alble to handle so much chrome because Johnny is a cyberpsycho, so although he achieves legend status in various endings, he probably has to chrome down after the fact because of the limitations of Johnny not being there anmore.
If you play a V with minimal chrome though? then they’re 100% a result of skill and nothing else. Its hard, especially on very hard difficulty , but it can be done.

Without the Relic, they’d be a corpse that had great potential but not much more.
Later on, I like to think the cyberpsychosis being shared helped a lot. But tbh it’s also V’s growing skills, deeper pockets to pay for better chrome and overall sheer determination that make them a top-tiered merc.

Without that much chrome V and a dying Jackie took out the entire KP security. And a mech. And drones. So they were already pretty strong.
Thing is, without the relic, they would never have to meet Dex, not about the KP job anyways, ending in Jackie and V still living another night in Night City.
So if I had a guess, V alone, even without the relic is a pretty badass merc. V couldn’t go full chrome but like stated earlier, it isn’t something that would hurt his/her capacity.
(Like Corpo lifepath already state that V is a menace in his/her Arasaka files.)

Without the Relic, V would be just another corpse at the landfill on the outskirts of Night City

No. Also the game is a power fantasy

Honestly that’s why V takes the job for Mr blue eyes it’s not about trying to save himself it’s trying to prove that he is the legendary Mark that everybody thinks he is without Johnny
petrospago351
without the relic v would had been dead in a scrap yard but if the relic didnt exist at all the whole mission about it would had never happened and v would eventually become the best in night city but ironically with more difficulty because i heard that the relic helped v endure all the chrome he has because otherwise he would had been driven insane

Just in the middle of a second playthrough for 2.0 and there have been two hard instances of the relic resurrecting V. Konpeki Plaza’s bullet to the head, and GIM’s neural fry. Plus I’ve been picking up on implicit statements that the relic is smoothing over a lot of the extreme stress you put your body through. The relic is killing you, but making sure the body stays alive sort of deal.
So no, V wouldn’t be a legend like they are in the game without the relic IMO. Not because of the chain reaction of life from who you meet by accepting the KP heist. Just simply because the relic lets V go hard for six months with an immortality cheat code active. Get chromed out, net run hard and deep, and/or do all the crazy high risk high reward stuff. The relic will keep V chugging along (for a while at least).

V might have risen to the level of Edgerunners’ Maine, and died in the same fashion, if they hadn’t taken the Konpeki job and wound up with the Relic.

Sean Gunn is not my first choice but there he is.

The relic is what makes V be as powerful as they are.
Think of it as a computer having 2 CPUs and both can share the workload.
TwisterM292
Well if it weren’t for the Relic, V would be brain-fried by VDBs in the GIM when confronting Mosley
Awayforthewin
Desperation definitely helped but it could’ve been done in a longer period of time without it.
Death_Fairy
The relic provided the push V needed to hit their full potential.
V did all they did because of their own skill, but without the extreme circumstances that stealing the relic created V probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity/ motivation to hit those heights. At least not nearly as quickly as they did.

it’s more a question of “would V have ever lived up to the same potential without being forced”
V did already have an unnatural tolerance to chrome and the through vengeance becomes this whirlwind of destruction, but do they ever reach that out without a Relic getting corrupted in their skull? We know Vik is a very responsible Ripperdoc and would probably make V stay within “normal” ranges. as a merc, V would still be “Jackie’s Choom” after the intro, and would probably stay as Jackie’s +1 for gigs, and… lets be real, while V had crazy potential… Jackie not so much.
the most likely way V still reaches their potential… is something else sets them off. they get betrayed, Jackie gets killed, a person who V cares about gets hurt or fucked over. V needs something else that sets them off.
