The reasoning has a few facets: using fewer cables means the cables carry more load making them run hotter, which increases resistance, which makes the cable hotter and the PSU work a little more. A sustained loading could expose any flaws in construction.
Not all PSU cables are made equal, those with thinner wires won’t handle heavy loads as well as those made with heavier gauge wire.
I don’t know if anyone has done more the GamersNexus on transient spikes yet, but it seemed that some of the recommendations from PSU and GPU makers to use more cables is to mitigate some of the issues related to transient spikes causing the PSU protections tripping.

Most here are going to repeat that no, its not ok. The truth of the matter is if that’s a high quality PSU model with good 16AWG cables, yeah its probably more than fine.
The majority of these scene has people who don’t really understand this stuff just blindly repeating that all daisy chaining is bad.

Edit: what is your PSU ? if it’s a quality one it should be alright because they use thicker copper, if it’s a cheap one i wouldn’t risk it because they maybe used thinner copper that could run hot
use at least 3 different cables, pcie cables (Edit: connectors not cables, sorry for that) are recommended for 150w and the rtx 4090 uses usually 400-450w at stock, the motherboard itself power the gpu for 75w

From what I remember you need at least 3 seperate ones to run the card at stock speeds. If you want to set the power limit higher, you have to connect the 4th one as well.

Please make sure the cable is fully inserted. I’ve seen too many people’s 4090s melt because the cable wasn’t fully inserted. Make sure you hear a click when plugging it in.

* Corsair **only** use the Minifit HCS connectors for their 8-pin PCIe cables, not the standard Minifit Jr. (HCS = High Current System, they can handle more current).
* They also aren’t in the habit of selling PSUs that explode or catch fire.
* What’s the fucking point of having daisy chain connectors/cables if you can’t use them?
* A single 8-pin HCS connector can safely handle far more than the 150W that PCI-SIG state in the PCIe spec. PCI-SIG do not make the connectors, Molex do. Molex rate them for far more than what PCI-SIG state in the PCIe spec.
If you ***can*** use single cables, then I think you should. It’ll reduce the current through each pin, and that’s only a good thing.
If you ***can’t*** use single cables or simply don’t want to, then this is fine too. Literally no bad will come from it, beyond PCMR users screaming at you.

It depends on the quality of the power supply. For example, on Seasonic units, their proprietary 12pin connector only connects to two ports on the PSU, so using 4 connectors off 2 ports would be fine. But if it’s at all in question, best to use all 4.

A 4090 TBP is 450W, but likely transient spikes to 500W.
