I know, GPUs are pretty expensive, but some people really have unreal expectations from game devs

Not saying that the optimization is top notch, **but** hating on the devs because they used a newer API feature (that was introduced with the RTX 20/GTX 16 series) is just stupid imo.

  2. Level_Parfait_9663

Oh look, the voice of reason.

    Prepare to get downvoted.

  3. zenithtb

    I think it’s kinda funny.

In all the previous generations, PC users complained that games were written so they could run on consoles and didn’t push the latest PC hardware.

Then a game does, and everyone freaks out.

  4. Nuremburglar

Awful lot of people are mad because they’re too broke to afford the upgrades required for shit like this.

You dumb or just practicing for the dipshit olympics?

  5. coycabbage

Do people not realize that hardware has limitations? It’s like aircraft or car engines.

  6. ReverendAntonius

Out here just vibing with my 1660 Super.

  7. paulerxx

Most games still run on a RX580 just fine.

  8. Gamebird8

Imma hit yall with a Spicy Take: Alan Wake 2 is kinda average and is riding on the fact that it’s graphics are good and people are memeing about it

  9. OperationExpress8794

Upgrade gpu just for one average game, no thanks!!

  10. InvestigatorSenior

History repeats itself, kinda. It used to be that consoles were halting progress in gaming. Now some PCMR members want to halt progress.

It used to be normal that GPU was obsolete the moment it hit the store shelves because of not having certain technologies like texture filtering, T&L, shaders, directX version support and so on. GPU older than a year still being able to play all new games was a rare exception. That’s the price of progress. If you don’t want to upgrade for a long time buy a console.

  11. The game doesn’t even require mesh shaders right?

  12. kajidourden

Proudly rocking a 1080ti, still does me juuuust fine at 1440. Definitely going to get serious about upgrading in the next generation though lol.

  13. BonemanJones

My 2070 didn’t feel that old to me until I realized the 20 series released in 2018.

  14. One thing I wish with steam reviews the specs of the reviewer should automatically be shown would make a big difference

  15. MochaKola

Counter point: the (AAA) devs have likely made games that run great on a 1080 Ti before, and we aren’t in the greatest of economic times. Why *not* just make more fun games around those same expectations/specifications? Like are those new pretty shading systems and whatnot really essential to a fun gaming experience or are they just shooting themselves in the foot by raising the barrier to entry and therefore hurting sales?

  16. IceColdCorundum

I think a 6 year old gpu should be showing its age right now. Not obsolete, but definitely not enough power anymore.

  17. ChiggaOG

I have a 1080ti, and I still don’t have Cyberpunk 2077. To me, the GPUs with ray tracing are still not there. It’s still too computationally heavy.

  18. I--Hate--Ads

I mean the 1080 ti has the same performance as the PS5, it should run modern games just fine.

  19. NapoleonBlownApart1

As far as i am concerned ampere cards cant run AW2 either.

Frequent drops to 30s in the forest at dusk/dawn.

Is me expecting 720p60 with a 3070ti also unrealistic now?

  20. le_stuka_pilot

Man y’all be like a got the GTX 1060…. I GOT A 2013 WORKSTATION GPU WITH 2GB VRAM

  21. BryAlrighty

I dunno if it’s unrealistic though.. the PS5 version of the game doesn’t even use mesh shaders I don’t think, so they could have potentially released a PC version that didn’t either.

  22. ValorantDanishblunt

Angry to users be right tho. Alan Wake 2 doesnt look next gen so i dont see why it should run as badly as it does.

  23. Tinymini0n

1080ti here. Dont put all of us in same basket :D. I dont buy new games for 2 reason
1: most of new games are garbage or theme is not for me
2: i can barely run older games on high and i dont expect to even try new games on high..altho i did play thru cyberpunk with about 40-50fps.

Waiting for next series. Probably nvidia 5xxx. Usually i upgrade whole set about every 5y or so Been postponing gfx purchase because

    1: insane cost
    2: insane weight

    3:high consumption

4: the “small” problems like nvidia and its cable shananigans -.-

ps. 1080ti still has power in it. if i dont remember wrong in raw power its compared to 3060ti or something like that.

  24. Mazurcaletale

    yes the 1080TI is old

still Alan wake 2 is poorly optimized

  25. My GTX 1080, to this day, has kept playing modern games on max settings easily. I only have a 1080p monitor, though, so no crazy 4k.

  26. If you’re trying to make old hardware last forever, that’s great.

I don’t want games optimized around your old hardware.

I’d also like games to be optimized around hardware that currently exists.

I’m asking for a lot here.

  27. TheR3aper2000

What makes this even funnier are the people playing brand new games on their 1080 Ti and claiming their 40-60 FPS at 1080p is playable

Like bruh, you bought a 1080 Ti back in the day and you think 40-60 FPS at 1080p in 2023nis playable?

It’s the sunk cost fallacy, they spent so much money on the 1080 Ti back in the day that they think it’s better than it actually is in 2023

IMO, my 2070 Super started showing its age earlier in the year when the newest releases started to drop it to under 80 FPS at 1080p, and even lower when I upgraded to a 3440x1440p monitor

So I bit the bullet and bought a 4070 on Amazon with a $150 Amazon gift card and now I play everything over 120 FPS at 3440x1440p again. Bottom line, don’t get into PC gaming if you aren’t willing to upgrade your hardware after 3-4 years, it’s just not realistic.

Some people will say you should just buy a console instead then since they’ve caught up so much. Those people don’t take into account that the consoles can only do 4k with upscaling, and only up to 60 FPS (120 FPS with 1440p which is ok)

TL;DR, people shouldn’t be expecting a GPU to last for anymore than 3-4 years. It’s never been that way, they always start to fall off in performance, the 1080 Ti isn’t as magical as it was when it released, and sub 60 FPS at 1080p in 2023 should not be considered *playable*

  28. IntrepidusX

I’m just thrilled that my 1080 is still rocking, what a solid card. I’ve never had one perform this long this well before.

  29. SnuffleWumpkins

It doesn’t look good enough to justify how poorly it runs.

  30. alphagusta

What annoys me is how the price of the top tier in a series is now the price of the bottom end of a series.

Like call me naive but what exactly changed in GPU production to make $500 turn into $2000 in as little as 5-8 years?

  31. The rant with the 1080Ti is stupid.

But this post is also bait for discussion, we all know that game devs are abusing DLSS/FSR too much of that.

  32. nah bro they don’t optimize their hot garbage anymore, having a high end gpu should be an option not a requirement

  33. Salt_Vermicelli9788

It’s not the 90s or early 2000s. Back then there were legit massive jumps in performance and tech necessitating frequent hardware upgrades. Modern hardware is fine. Developers need to optimize their games better if something as powerful as a 1080 Ti can’t run it.

  34. Drathothic

My issue is that games don’t really look *that* much better compared to the ones that came out when the 1080Ti was dominating

  35. So, what stops devs from making ultra low graphics setting that will allow more people play these games?

For example CS2. Even on lowest settings it still looks better than CSGO. So why can’t they make settings to even lower graphics so it would look like CS 1.6? More people will be able to play it, without spending lot of money for GPU.

I mean, graphics isn’t most important thing in game. I know lot of very good games with shitty graphics but amazing gameplay.

  36. Deimos_Aeternum

Nooooo, devs are supposed to make their game run at 4K/60fps ultra settings on my aging hardware and it should look next gen or I’m gonna make fun of consoles for not pushing tech boundaries

  37. Well when games today on lowest settings look like a game from 1990 and still run shit there MIGHT be some justification on the 1080 Ti or any older gpu-s side. We dont expect them to run at 60fps full settings but when i can run witcher at 60fps on full graphs i would expect a game on low settings looking like modded minecraft to run better than 6fps

  38. reddit_pengwin

The question is this… do the increased requirements result in sufficient visual improvements?

I think most of us can understand why games need insane hardware when they look like true next gen products. But the devs have no excuse when stuff like Cities:Skylines II or Starfield run like crap.

  39. chingchong69peepee

“unreal expectations” shut the fuck up man, games were better optimized 10 years ago, with even worse graphics drivers. Since the release of Cyberpunk 2077 the bar is so low I swear. These are AAA games with MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BUDGETS. This is not like No Man’s Sky where the developers were in the indie scene and over promised features. This shit is cancer and apologists like you just make it worse for everyone. Thousand dollar GPU can’t run this game at 1080p. It should be illegal to sell this as a finished product.

  40. mrgwbland

No kidding if a 1080 to can’t run the game then it’s the devs’ fault

  41. Fluentec

Can someone explain why it is an unreal expectation? I am new to this.
