How can I clean the mess a friend did?

  1. I have seen cases where you can still install the CPU in this thing and have it work.

But if it will work for a long time is unknown.

ooh dear, well, isopropyl alcohol + a very soft toothbrush. I think Jayz did a video on it recently – unironically.

Turn the board upside down and leave it for a decade. It’ll mainly dry out and fall off after some time (read: many years). Then gently scrape off the excess.

How in the hell did your friend put a crapton of thermal paste on the goddamn socket without putting the CPU first and then the paste? Or did he put the paste on the CPU first, and did it fall from his hand to the socket, with the heat spreader full of paste?

    Now, a small solution.

I’ve read from your comments that it isn’t conductive thermal paste, so don’t worry about it shortening anything. Put some extremely good isopropyl alcohol in there, and scrub a little with a toothbrush, and wait.

Then scrub the residue. I can’t guarantee that the method will work though, as I can see that some has gotten inside the socket.

Put it in a container, pour some(a lot) of isopropyl alcohol, let it sit with a lid on, keep that container away from stuff, it’s highly flammable. After an hour or two, clean gently with a soft toothbrush.

Kill your friend and bury that motherboard besides them, so they may clean it themselves in the afterlife.

why tf did you let your friend do that

Ok, serious answer. Do you have a spare toothbrush? If so pour some isopropyl alcohol on the socket then lightly scrub with the toothbrush it will slowly come out. Then you will need to let it dry for a few hours or to be safest a full day. Then once dry see if there is still more. If there is just repeat that process again it’s your best chance.

The paste seems confined to the motherboard so it should be easy to throw the whole thing out and clean up the mess.

Following the jay2cents video I cleaned it with a toothbrush and alchool and now it works just fine

your friend seemed to really like his mother…board

Try to clean as much as you can, I’ve had a friend build multiple computers putting thermal paste UNDER the cpu (in the socket) for years. They all worked fine oddly enough. He puts it on the heat spreader now lol

  21. I thought that jay2cents video He did about this was stupid… Like, how do you even get paste **in** the socket?

    Well… Touché I guess
