I’ve been very happy with my gaming laptop, an Asus
eyeaheaye
Lmao me increasing the volume to ignore the overheating fan noises

They’re portable and can offer great performance, just not great performance for the money
Yostman29
I showed my buddy next to me his lap top idles at about 70 and sits at 97c after I cleaned it
ketaminiacOS
Desktops are of course way better value for money and they can be upgraded in increments.
But a lot of people are often away from home when they have time to game and can hardly use their desktops if they had them.
Both have their place.
Disastrous-Owl-
Plus most of them needing to be plugged in to play majority of games that aren’t 2d platformers removes even the portability advantage.
Ronin22222
I’ve got an Alienware from 2015 that the GPU died on a few years back and is now just an internet browser.
They’re over rated. You’re better off with a good desktop or if you need portability, grab one of the PC handhelds from Valve, Asus, or Lenovo and you’ll be set
SneedLikeYouMeanIt
Real laptop gamers don’t need software to check temps, they just put their fingers on that little strip of plastic between the keyboard and the screen hinges so they can feel their components’ life-force slowly burning away.

It’s been a while since, but I regret having used a gaming laptop for university for a couple of years, not because it was unuseable but because I overestimated my portability requirements and would’ve probably been happier with a gaming desktop in my room and a cheap laptop for the library and for going home over the weekend. If you really NEED portability you’ll find ways to make a gaming laptop work for you, but seriously think about whether you NEED the portability.
Ha-Gorri
I have had one for 6 years, MSI GL62, 1050ti, i5 7300HQ, 16GB RAM… now I updated to a way more powerful desktop and I can say I miss one thing from the laptop (which I now use for work, reading or watching anime) and that is the comfy aspect of it, playing on my bed or couch was cool, but it is true that for heavy games it reached almost 90ºC sometimes so I stopped playing them (doesn’t help I live in a very hot country).
They’re decent, but obviously not even close with what you can do with a PC Tower
CDB1299
In my experience.I had a gaming laptop from 2015-2017.It was pretty ok,but they will never come close to custom built home pcs

gaming laptops take same place as mac, i like but i will never buy

Better than a desktop? It depends. My gaming laptop is better than most older towers. However, a friend I consulted said that the CPU in it is a so-called “starter”, so any tower that has similar ram to mine is going to be better.
CounterSYNK
Is it portable tho?

Armycat1-296
My Dell 5577 died due to overheating after the humid air dried the thermal paste. gaming laptops are not recommended to use here in the Caribbean.
IcePanda45X
As long as my i7 rtx4060 can run cyberpunk, im happy
cidiusgix
I am required to have a laptop for school. Might as well play games on it as well.
vBeeNotFound
Got a Legion Slim 5, saw max temps around 70 degrees on both cpu and gpu on balance mode in gaming.
1600x900
The laptop’s pros is you can use it anywhere and play anywhere. Another bonus pros. It can be your portable heater if winter get too cold, plus relaxing high-rpm fan noise
RugbyEdd
I have a HP Pavilion with I believe the 1660TI, that I got when my desktop broke and prices for GPU’s were through the roof, and it did me well for a couple of years of heavy use. I’d run it at home in a dual screen setup (with the laptop its self replacing my usual second screen) and a USB bank so I could use a decent external drive and peripherals. It was nice and easy to upgrade the memory when I wanted more internal M2 memory too. Still does well when I travel. Been playing Starfield on it no issue.
Yes it kicks out a decent bit of fan noise when working hard, and gets hot with extended use, but it’s lasted just fine with extensive gaming sessions and you kind of blank out the sound of the fans even if you’re not using a headset. Definitely a decent option for people who want a more portable PC gaming experience, or if you can pick one up for cheaper.
DON0044
There’s nothing wrong with gaming laptops and most people’s rigs are weaker than a lot of gaming laptops too.
elite0x33
My legion 7i 4080 is comparable to my 3090/10990K at home if not slightly faster.
Different use cases but I can and do take it literally everywhere with me atm. Temps can be spicy but there is so much more wiggle room than my old 1060M MSI laptop.
I can run Phantom Liberty maxed tf out at sub 100 fps at 1440 and sit at 70-80c. I have headphones so fan noise doesn’t bother me but if I needed to, I can scale back to like 1080p on med/high and not be bothered by fan noise at all.

Got an alienware area 51m to work as a desktop replacement, it’s got a desktop 2070 inside but still runs cooler than my old XFX 5500xt

The 4090 in my laptop stays about the same temp as my 3090ti desktop and is almost identical in performance. The 13900hx vs my 12700k is another story, about 20-25c hotter but noticeably better performance in my laptop.
Lothar93
I am happy with mine, yes is inferior but for less money and portable for uni
OfficialSpiderPig
I’ve got an MSI laptop, never buying anything MSI again, just issues and bad build quality and bad temps. But the portability has been amazing, constantly on the move, so having a strong rig anywhere I go really helps.
Desktops and laptops both have their place!
King_Regastus
If we’re looking at performance, not at all. However it is a matter of need. I can’t really build a rig in my dorm room or bring a hunk of metal and a monitor when I go back to my parents for the holidays.
Light-Delablue
i never see a gaming latpop leaving a home. at best its also go in a dorm.
NotaVortex
I think gaming laptops are perfectly fine. Desktop users can clown on them all they want, but my 3060 mobile with 6gb of vram still runs most games at high settings and 60 fps or more 🤷♂️. That being said I will probably get a desktop at some point just because I do move my laptop around a lot so it would be nice to have a machine that I can more permanently plug in my peripherals too.
EdibleBirch
Desktop will always be better. You’re sacrificing some for portability.
PizzaToastieGuy
Compared to a desktop of similar spec? No. But, they’re portable, take up less space, and in quite a few cases, they still offer quite the punch
Ok_Ride6186
Couldn’t be my i5 8400H pegged at 95°c and throttles all the way to 2.0ghz, maybe even lower at times. New thermal paste. The msi GF63 just has terrible cooling.
Chemical_Use_5367
I got a nitro 5, it’s quiet and runs cooler than my old elitebook. The specs are garbage though. The 3050ti has only 4gb of vram. Not to mention the driver setup was a pain in the ass. Paid way too much. Gonna return it. Just get a steam deck or rog ally people. They are cheaper and have almost as good specs. A USB hub for a mouse and keyboard will work nicely. Desktops are superior.
Eilanzer
Just use a table with fans for laptop. Portable, cheap and efficient.

Fuck gatekeeping, play with what you want.
I like laptops, i can just pick it up and go to balcony or kitchen with it. Or to a friends place to have mini lan party.
Dr-Crobar
A laptop works best for my setup. I lack a desk for a proper desktop so instead a put a cushion from an ancient (and I mean ANCIENT) couch on my bed, which I then place two D&D books, specifically the basic players manual and dungeon master’s guide on the bed as both are hard back and the same size. I then place my laptop atop the books, which are spread out so there is a gap for air under the laptop and a place to set a wireless mouse. Then next to my bed, I have a really old, falling apart office chair that I set a box fan in, then said box fan is set to full blast and the chair moved into a position where cool air is being constantly blown over my laptop from the side.
All of this so I can game.
ItsMrDante
Gaming laptops aren’t even overheating anymore. They are hot, but they don’t overheat. The CPU is designed to run at temps higher than what laptop CPUs run at AND they’re portable, they come with a screen and a keyboard, they have a battery to be able to use it outside of the house with no issues or worrying about finding a place to plug it.

Literally no reason to make fun of gaming laptops when they were the only thing that got people through the price increase during the epidemic. People don’t just wanna use their PC at home
Shiroi_Kitsune_
Idk my old desktop is lauder than my laptop
TG_Yuri
Desktops easily take the win imo, but that doesn’t mean laptops are totally worthless…
I just got a laptop because it was an absolute steal at the time, I need a solid machine on the go and I don’t really have that much room for a desktop anyways.
My Legion 5 (R5, 1650Ti, 16GB RAM and ~750GB storage total) has been fulfilling my needs for a few years now. Temps aren’t a problem either as I’ve barely even seen it reach 55-60°C on a hot day doing a continuous 30 minute CPU & GPU heavy benchmark.
XenonJFt
It all depends on this one question. Do you travel every month or couple of weeks. If yes then definetly. Rest is no…
