I still wish there was an option to just whack the guy after you figure out what’s going on.

The quest is like a philosophy lesson. Very unique among games. I guess it’s only purpose is to stimulate discourse on forgiveness and the nature of religion. Or you can always shoot him in the head and shorten the quest. I enjoy playing it though.
