Smokers tend to have many ashtrays around their house, mainly in places where they smoke at. I haven’t seen a house full of them in a while since nowadays people smoke less, but when i was a kid my heavy smoking relatives had them everywhere

You have apparently never lived with a chain smoker. Unless you want ash and burn holes everywhere, an ash tray in every room is the right move. Hell, just in my childhood living room, my parents had 3: One on the coffee table, one by the phone, and another by the hall to the kitchen.
The fact that there is 4 ash trays in such a small apartment just goes to show how prolific of a smoker Johnny and/or V is.

It would be just like Fight Club film, when V is asleep; it is JS time.. he be smoking in all four corners of the apartment of at least a four to six hour ritual.. before going to sleep hours before V is about to wake up.
V being too tired to notice the smoky bits of ashtray cigarette wander swiftly to the next ncpd gigs or panam or joby or takemure whatever..
