Why has this barely changed in 30 years?

  1. It did. In the early days the jumpers were spread all over the board and nothing written on it, you had to search the manual every time. Now everything is in one place and everything written on the board.

hahaha in the old days you had to wire by hand and it was not fun at all!!! The manual had a wiring diagram and each wire was one little itty bitty square…

It works and there is no need to break backwards compatibility

I think motherboard manufacturers and case makers would need to adopt the same revision at the same time, or there needs to be an adapter. I do hope it’s replaced in future with something like a USB port.

  5. Be glad you have this adapter. It is the blessing from heavens

Because it doesn’t really need to but it has changed in the past 30 years.

Replacing it with a standard connector would create a need for an adapter for anyone with an older case. For the function we are talking about here, there’s hardly any gain from the effort that would be put in

30 years ago was prehistory for front panel connectors. There were barely front panels to connect as we know them today.

20 years ago was the wild wild west of anything goes you wanna put all your front panel connectors in a long line along one edge? Go get em tiger.

About 15 years ago we started seeing a fairly standardized layout appear. This standard has persisted to this day along with the fact that a few boards for no particular reason just tell the standard to go fuck itself. Even tho they aren’t actually doing anything new with it.

What is this? Never seen this on 2 computers I’ve built

    Because it works.

If it’s so hard for you, get one of those adapters, they do make it easier. Mobos should come with one included, or cases should, one of the two.

Don’t fix what ~~ain’t broken~~ is too broken to fix

Because the fundamental workings of electricity haven’t changed either.

the same reason why desktop computers have pretty much always had separate GPUs connected to a motherboard, that system works so well that there’s no need to not just keep making better and better GPUs because we can’t really develop a new, better system without taking a step back in terms of performance quality for at least 10 years.

  14. I actually don’t know why people whine about this. Even Linus! 99% of motherboards use the same easily memorizable pinout: PWR LED +, -, Switch. HDD LED +, -, Reset Switch.

You know what I really hate? The CPU power on the top left of the motherboard. Always a ridiculous curve in the cable, and did you want to mount an AIO there? Well, fuck you buddy! I literally had to get a Dremel and cut off the corner of my Corsair AIO fan because of those power cables.

I love how nzxt case just make it one connector.

Well it works so I’m not seeing an issue, yeah it can take a few minutes to sort out but then you close it up and never touch it again for most of its lifespan.

A cool idea might be making a thunder bolt port that can control power on/off, HDD light, etc but also transfer data, audio. Allowing case makers to use one cable and add whatever they want to their front panel boards. Then could leave the legacy header/connections on the front panel board for those who want. I could see a breakout board work too, easy to hide.

  17. This used to be the hardest part of building a PC, I used to ask my GF to connect the with me telling her what to put where… Nowaday they made them way easier to connect and not being 8 single connection.

No more PC speaker. I was amazed the first time I heard “Out of this World” with the PC speaker. I didn’t think it was possible to have sounds besides beeps from the PC speaker.

My dad says this all the time, and I happen to agree with him on this:

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”

Because this is not flashy rgb, it can’t make your significant sales.

  21. Look at Fancypants here with an Asus Q connector complaining. Us peasants have to hook up each wire onto the motherboard, not some fancy adapter that plugs in all at once!
